Fledgling: Part 71

Hello Readers!

I hope this update finds you all well! It has been dreary and wet here in Cape Town, which gave me the perfect opportunity to write a bit more on this tale!

I hope you all enjoy the update!

The two limped back to the camp. Red-Eye had insisted on taking Jackal’s head and had buried it deep and far away from the corpse they had left behind. It was more honorific than it was to prevent the creature from resurrecting.

By the time they returned to where their companions were, the dead had been gathered in one place. Saita was exhausted but knowing that she could see her husband one more time, made the exhaustion worthwhile.

But before she could call out to him two individuals pulled her into an embrace. She had no idea who they were but clearly, they knew who she was.

“We knew you wouldn’t just abandon us.” Said the young woman.

“That was a heck of a fight. You’ve hardly changed.” Said the young man.

She let them embrace her but was uncomfortable by the action. In the distance, she saw Bolx who gave a half-smile but said nothing. The look changed to one of concern when he saw Red-Eye at Saita’s side.

The pair eventually released Saita, as if realising something wasn’t right. Bolx stepped in at that moment to introduce them.

“Saita, this is Maxine and Martin. They’re from Brucel’s time.”

“The universe spit them out here too?” she queried.

The woman turned away and made her way to the cabin. Saita was confused at the action and the young man tried to explain what was going on.

“We thought…we thought you’d come back for us.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Saita, there is a lot to talk about.” Said Bolx. “I suggest we all have our wounds seen to and we find a point to start.”

Just when Saita was about to ask about Aidan’s whereabouts, the young boy collided with her side. Knocking the wind from her. She sank to her knees and embraced him, despite several ribs protesting. Tears streaked down her face. The last time she had seen her son alive he had been an old man, greying and losing hair. She had sat vigil at his deathbed, angry that she would have to bury him a second time.

“Gods, I missed you.” She whispered.

She felt the young man shift position behind her and she couldn’t help but look up at him. He looked shattered and tried his best to avoid her gaze.

“Let’s get everyone inside. Wolven too.” Said Martin sadly before he walked away.

Saita continued to look at the man in confusion before turning to Bolx and asking, “Who are those two?”

“Those are our twins.”

Saita hadn’t argued. She remained silent as the last of the bodies were dragged into a pit and set on fire, and then the injured were seen too. Kay had been significantly injured but had refused to be knocked out to deal with anything, instead opting to have herself stitched up while conscious. Which would have been fine, if one of the abdominal cuts hadn’t been deep enough for a loop of intestine to poke through.

Martin had acted swiftly. He tapped the centre of Kay’s head, and she had crumpled into a heap. When Red-Eye had protested, Martin had threatened to do the same to him. It didn’t take Saita long to realise the skills the young man possessed.

His life force acted like surgical tools, seeking out dead and dying tissues to clean them, accelerate the healing process, and combat any pathogenic influence. The only thing he couldn’t do was offer pain relief with his abilities.

With Kay unconscious, he moved to the other injuries, but he was only one person, and too many had been injured. Saita had waved him on from her. The bite wounds were deep, but nothing major had been torn and her limb still functioned well. She would be able to clean it herself, especially after watching him treat those around her. She wasn’t nearly as adept as him, but she could get a head start on the process while he helped the others.

While this was happening, Bolx and Aidan remained as far away from Red-Eye as they possibly could. The Wolven respected their fear and instead remained curled around Kay, protecting her, and also refusing medical treatment.

“I will heal without intervention.” He growled.

Martin hadn’t pushed it. Once he had a look over Saita’s healing job, he turned his attention to Kay.

“This is going to take a while. She’s got a lot of injuries, many internal. Is there something I need to know about her?”

It was as if someone finally addressed the elephant in the room. Saita sighed and said, “She’s like me. I mean, she is me. Gods damn it.”

She took a deep breath, “Are you aware of the System?”

She tapped her chest.

Martin nodded his head.

“She has one too, but I’m not sure if she has a controller module.”

The twins seemed to share a look, and Martin nodded his head once. He then turned to Red-Eye and told him to pick up the unconscious Kay and bring her to a room.

“I will be a while.” He said with a hint of exhaustion.

“You can barely stand.” Protested Bolx.

“I can help with that.” Said Fledge as he stood.

“You can barely stand.” Said Rubar as the man swayed a little.

Saita painfully got to her feet and rolled her left sleeve up. Fledge shook his head and muttered, “You barely have energy as it is.”

Using the fingers on her right hand, she brushed the skin, causing black marks to swirl to the surface. Fledge stared in bewilderment.

“You have so much stored?”

“It’s a fraction, and it’s taken many years, but yes.”

Fledge didn’t hesitate to grip her forearm, taking the energy freely gifted to him.

“What’s happening?” asked Maxine.

“Sharing energy, which I will be doing for your brother as well.” Said Fledge.

Now that Saita had time to look at the twins, she could see the family resemblance. Maxine could easily have been the younger sister to her and Kay, and Martin looked so much like Gatex and Bolx that there was no question about where he got his Saith heritage from. She was surprised that there were no tails.

Once Fledge, Red-Eye, Martin, and Kay had left, Bolx turned to Saita and asked, “What the hell is going on?”

This is going to be a heck of a story to tell!
