Fledgling: Part 68
Greetings Readers!
I spent most of my weekend working on Fell Dragon, and I am quite happy with where the story is at this point. I hope you're all ready for what is going to transpire in the next few weeks!
Saita wanted to dissolve into tears at finally seeing him again. This was everything she had dreamed of for the last few months. His smell hadn’t changed, and his tight grip was just as powerful. She clung to him, knowing that she didn’t have too much time with him.
Before she could pull away and explain what was going on a strange howl leapt into the air. It wasn’t like a classic wolf howl that Saita had come to know from the Vulpine and Wolven, this was something else.
Baks let her pull away and found himself shocked at what was slowly coming toward them. It looked like an amalgamation of metal and fur. It looked like the Wolven he had had to face in his own time, and he couldn’t help but feel the old fear creep into his belly. That was until he saw the creature appeared to be limping forward.
No, not limping, dragging something in one of its clawed front paws. It would lift the paw with the dead weight in it then sink it into the snow as it moved forward with its other limbs.
“Kay!” screamed Red-Eye.
The creature barked so loudly that it felt like Bolx’s lungs shook in its chest.
“Now I understand.” Said the creature.
Behind it, the snow was streaked with bright red from the body it was dragging with it, but it didn’t seem to care. It looked at those before it and grimaced, or grinned, it was difficult to tell with the flesh that barely clung to the skull.
“I understand.” It looked to Fledge and then Saita, then Aidan. “I understand.”
Saita was frozen. She had known that the fight had been stacked against Kay, but she hadn’t expected this outcome. The creature, who she assumed was Jackal, was glaring at those before him with absolute disgust.
“So, these are the chains that are holding you back. It would seem they did a number on my pack. I need to break these chains, yes, but there are many.”
Bolx made to step forward, but Saita swung her arm out to stop him. She needed to know if Kay still lived or not.
“What the hell is that?” asked Martin.
Jackal’s attention snapped to him, and he sniffed the air deeply, “The blood runs deep, oh so, deep. I understand.”
He planted his weight on Kay’s head once more, sinking her deeper into the snow.
“A grand legacy but still chains.”
Then Jackal shocked all of them by reaching for the closest of the dead Wolven with a spare front paw and tearing into it. It didn’t take long for him to finish the carcass before reaching for another. The more he ate, the more the life force within him started to swell.
Saita looked to Red-Eye and saw slaver running from his jaw, but it wasn’t hunger, it was blinding fury at seeing what Jackal had done to Kay. Saita was sure that he would have flown at the Wolven, but he hadn’t. His muscles were bunched and ready for action, his claws were sunk deeply into the snow, and he was shaking, but he remained still.
Saita looked at where Kay lay. Around her, the snow was blooming red. She was alive! But clearly hurt and bleeding out. The new Dragon looked at Red-Eye and asked, “Is it worth talking to him?”
In his fury, Red-Eye only shook his head as Jackal reached for another one of the dead.
“She’s going to bleed out.”
Red-Eye nodded his head.
“Will you fight with me?”
“Saita, what…” started Bolx.
“I will explain everything, I promise, but right now we need to get that thing off of her.”
Bolx looked to where the mutilated Wolven crouched. Under his one paw was a limp body, with the other held onto a body of the fallen. Not only was it growing in life force, but it seemed to be accumulating what it ate in its body.
Metal slid into place and muscles bulged. Wounds that had been caused by the earlier fight were disappearing.
“You and Red-Eye take on that thing and we’ll get rid of the bodies.” Bolx inclined his head to the creature. “It’s using them to heal, grow, and get stronger.”
“I noticed.”
“Saita…” started Bolx.
She turned to her left to look at him and he knew instantly it was his Saita. It was cemented when she held up her right arm to show off the bangle that had been the partner to the one she had given him.
“Yes, by the way.” She said before she flew at the beast before them.
Snapping out of his surprise, Bolx quickly ordered the rest of those with him to destroy anybody they came across. He then looked up at the rage-filled Wolven with distrust before he said softly.
“Make sure she comes back to me. Promise me!”
Red-Eye gave one nod of his head then bolted after Saita.
Well, this should be a fun fight!
