Fledgling: Part 66
Greetings all
I have a bit of an off week and had some time to give you guys a slightly longer update than normal. I hope you all love it!
Kay didn’t know what had come over her. After all, she had been the one to put Aidan and Bolx in the position they were in right now. She shouldn’t have felt anything for the pair. She swore as she concentrated on creating the energy shoe shoes that allowed her to run across the snow as if it were nothing.
She hated feeling this urgency, this terror. She hated Saita. She was sure because she had been granted life from her, that it was her emotions that were influencing Kay right now. She doesn’t feel emotion; she hasn’t since she was a young kid.
Yet as she ran, she felt dread descending on her. She didn’t want to lose Bolx. He was the only reason she hadn’t allowed herself to completely meld with Saita’s subconscious. He had treated her like a person. Made her feel welcomed in a world that knew who she was and hated her. He didn’t have to do that. He could have locked her up or worse, found a way to destroy her.
But he never had, and she never understood that. Yet, she couldn’t let him fall here. If he died, she didn’t know how that would affect their timeline. Her musings were halted when a Wolven stopped her dead in her tracks. The patchy red fur with odd metal patches of skin was off-putting, but much less so than the face of the creature before.
What should have been a Wolven head was longer than it should have been, with odd proportions; one half was still partially organic, while the other half seemed to be mechanical. The entire lower jaw was metal, but the teeth still seemed to be the originals.
“Mistress.” It crooned at her.
While she knew many of the Wolven that served her during her time as a Dragon, this one wasn’t one she had seen before. Or at the very least not in this condition.
“Jackal.” She stated.
The creature’s furless tail wagged around its bipedal legs and its eyes shone with a glee that was bordering on madness.
“You do remember who I am.” It shouted.
“What do you want?” she asked it.
“You.” It moaned, as if in pain.
“Here I am. No need to bother with the others.”
“But the others must go, don’t you see? They are the shackles that hold you back from being a Dragon once more.”
“There is a new Dragon now. You should know better than to question the changing of a Dragon. You lived through one.”
“No!” barked the creature as it sank to all fours and stalked around in the snow for a while. “No! You are encumbered. I will free you! Yes?”
“What are you talking about?”
Just then Rubar, Saita, Fledge, and Red-Eye arrived. Kay signalled for Red Eye to continue. Rubar hesitated for a second then ran after the other Wolven. Saita’s hesitation was a little longer, long enough for Kay to look at her and mutter.
“Go save your husband and son. Leave this one to me.”
Saita wanted to do just that, but she knew that this fight wouldn’t be one that Kay could win. She needed to steal energy to create weaponry and to weaken the enemy and this Wolven had no lifeforce to speak of. She wasn’t sure what it ran on but there was no life in it.
“Go!” snapped the Dragon.
Saita sighed, nodded her head, and sprinted after the rest of the party. Jackal wasn’t going to let her get away so easily. This was the creature that held his Mistress captive for so long. He needed to get rid of her to make sure that the Dragon was truly free to run with her pack once more.
Jackal turned to snap at Saita, but Kay rammed her shoulder into him. The Wolven sprawled out into the snow and Kay put herself between the fleeing party and him.
“Nope.”
Jackal couldn’t understand what was going on. His Mistress should have wanted to be free to rule the universe as she once had. That was her job. A title that had been handed down from Dragon to Dragon to Dragon. Was this not his Mistress? Was something wrong with her?
The cage!
That’s right! She had been out of the cage for too long. She needed to go back to the cage. That is what always happens after a Dragon is defeated. The new Dragon would go to the cage and take over. His Mistress had been out of the cage for too long. She was forgetting who and what she was.
Jackal knew there was no talking to the Dragon-Who-Forgot. No, he needed to drag her back to the cage and ensure that she knew who she was. Slowly the Wolven dragged himself upright and looked at the creature that was meant to be his Mistress. She seemed so small, so helpless. Yes, he was right. This wasn’t his Mistress. This was something incomplete with bits and pieces of the creature who was the Dragon once shining through. He needed to bring her back, one way or another.
He launched himself at Kay with all his claws and teeth bared. She had a shield up and started to allow her armour to form around her. She wasn’t prepared for the brutal attack and was driven backward into the snow as teeth snapped in her face, easily punching through her shield.
“Oh, this is going to hurt.” She muttered under her breath as she rolled, allowing the Wolven to land in the snow next to her.
If her shield was going to be effective, then this fight needed to be won quickly, or Jackal would claim his prize. Kay almost regretted sending Saita away. She could have used her help.
Grinning at the thought of truly meeting freedom. Kay continued to form her armour and claws as the Wolven leapt from the deep snow once more.
“You’ll only catch me like that once.” Grinned Kay. “Let’s go.”
Let's redeem Kay a little.
