Fledgling: Part 63
Greetings Readers
I am not only late, but I have a very short update for all of you. We had a leak fixed today, and the drills are still ringing in my head.
Hopefully, later next week I can write a lot more for this series.
Red-Eye flattened his ears against his skull and stole a glance at Kay. She waved his concern away.
“You have nothing to be ashamed of.” She said. “You followed my orders.”
Then the question that had burned within Saita for decades.
“Why?”
Kay didn’t even bat an eye. Instead, she turned and looked at Saita with a look of open wonderment.
“You mean you have never figured it out? In all this time?”
“I understand that the Champions have to fight Dragons…”
Kay barked a laugh and said, “Don’t let the romantic version of what was spun about our history colour what I really did.”
Kay stepped forward and tapped Saita in the chest, then grinned, “I turned you into my suicide weapon.”
At that moment, Fledge pointed before him and said, “Rubar, Red-Eye. Here.”
The trance that had developed was suddenly broken and the two Wolven stepped forward and used their claws to cut away at the space before them.
The wounds had healed well, and he was able to walk around more comfortably, even though he struggled a little with the loss of his arm. He would still reach for items with the non-existent hand, only to become frustrated. He wasn’t used to this level of frustration. He had spent years in situations that were far worse than this, but this was something he just couldn’t adapt to.
He sat back on the porch and watched as the twins trained with Aidan. They were talented, but so was their brother. He kept up with them, despite his own scars that still pulled tight. He wasn’t afraid to barrel either of the twins over. They seemed to love it.
Bolx pulled his cloak closer around his frame. The cold weather seemed to continue, getting worse and worse, but today had been a clear blue sky when they had woken, and they had taken advantage of the rare, good weather.
Maxine noticed him staring and came to sit next to him, allowing the two brothers to continue their sparring. She understood that this man wasn’t the one who raised her, but being close to him was something she enjoyed.
“You know, Brucel found Saasha again.” Said Bolx after some time.
Maxine didn’t find that too comforting. Out of all the people who could have survived the collapse of their time, she had hoped it would be someone else from her family.
“I’m sorry. I never seem to say the right thing to you.” Bolx said softly.
“No, no. It’s not you. It’s me.” She said sadly. “My family would still have been together had I…”
Bolx shook his head, “Don’t dwell on the what-if, Maxine. They are painful reminders of a past that cannot be changed.”
They continued to watch the boys spar before something gnawed at Maxine. There was a sensation in the air, and it made her feel uncomfortable. It seemed to be affecting Bolx too, because he suddenly came to his feet and called Martin and Aidan to them.
“Red-Eye is here.” Said Bolx with a growl.
Aidan visibly paled but tried to keep a straight face. Martin gave a cocky grin.
“We can take one Wolven.”
“Not one.” Said Maxine softly.
Then a howl leapt into the air, echoing between the trees, carrying far across the snowscape. It was soon joined by several other howls.
“Far more than one.” Agreed Bolx, as he prepared himself for what was to come.
Hopefully, I will have more time this coming week to work on the new piece!
