Fledgling: Part 57
Greetings Readers
It has been a rough week. Valentino, the smallest of my boy rats, developed a mysterious lump over the weekend. On Wednesday, I sent him to the vet and got a diagnosis of an abscess, and he needed emergency surgery. Today, he had to go back to clean the wound once more. It has been both emotionally and financially draining week.
Because of this, you only get a short update. I hope you enjoy it all the same!
Not an hour later, Dragon Kay was humming a tuneless song under her breath as she tied the corpse to a makeshift crucifix. Saita was both disgusted and fascinated with what she was doing. It was clear that she had done this before, but why?
“How do you even know how to do that?” she eventually asked.
“Survival.” Said Kay as she continued her grisly task.
She had asked for no help and already had blood and brain matter all over her. Nothing seemed to bother her about what she was doing.
“I think your father did more than beat the feelings out of you.” Muttered Saita.
“This? This isn’t my father. This is surviving on the streets with gangs trying to revolt against a corrupt militant rule. The scarier you were, the better. Fewer people would try to hurt you.”
Saita looked over to where Queen Kay was standing. She was showing remarkable fortitude, not being sick with her pregnancy. But then again, it was difficult trying to read her as her face was stone. Next to her stood Meedus, fully healed and already stepping into the role of the queen’s advisor. Saita knew he was trying to glean information from the Dragon, but if he had learned anything, he wasn’t sharing.
As a final act of defilement, the Dragon tied the beast’s head back, so its exposed neck was open for all to see. A warning of coming after her. She grinned and wiped her hands on the coarse fur before stepping back.
“They are coming. Can’t stop them now. They will hunt me. Are you sure you still want to be attached to me?” she asked without looking at Saita.
“Promises were made.” Said Saita.
“Hmm.” The Dragon looked her creation up and down for a few minutes, then tilted her head.
After a few minutes of silence, she spoke once more.
“I think it’s time I call out to Red-Eye. If he gets here first, awesome. If not, we’re due for a fight.” She looked at the Queen. “Quit the field.”
The queen didn’t argue. She nodded her head and stepped forward with a hand extended. Kay looked her up and down, then showed her bloodied hands. The queen didn’t care and instead reached for the Dragon’s forearm to give it a shake. The Dragon reciprocated and had a smile on her face.
“Thank you.” Said the queen as she released the Dragon.
“What’s a few crucified bodies between twins?” She then looked up at Saita. “Triplets.”
“I’ll let you say your goodbyes.”
The queen moved past Saita, pausing only long enough to say, “There is history. Exposing it will make you stronger.”
She then looked to Meedus, “Say your goodbyes, old man. We have work to do, and you have to start working with my daughter.”
She then left the group.
Meedus looked at Saita, and the woman wouldn’t meet his eyes. She had just gotten him back, and now she was going to lose him again. It was hard for her.
“I had hoped that you would be able to help.” Said Saita softly. “And all I did was rip you away from your family and friends.”
“Yes, you did.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I can’t forgive you.”
It was a conversation they had had previously, but Saita had hoped that Meedus would have softened a little, knowing that this was the last time he would see her.
“I really am sorry.” She whispered.
“Then live your life.”
Saita snorted. “I have already lived my life.”
Meedus shook his head, “No, you haven’t, not yet. There is more to come, far more. There are points in your time that you need to ensure happen. Things that never made sense as to why they occurred.”
He then inclined his head to Kay, who was walking around the corpse with an odd grin on her face. Saita could feel the energy dripping from her. She had no idea where Kay had found the energy to do this, but she was doing it.
“And she has the answers, but you need to ask her.”
“What answers could she possibly have?” demanded Saita.
“She and your husband, now don’t give me that look. Had a relationship. Not like that! A trail has been left, and it’s in her mind. She won’t volunteer it. She doesn’t trust you. You kept her captive for decades, and she isn’t done torturing you quite yet. To get the answers you want, you must work with her.”
“You don’t have much time!” called Kay. “Something would have noticed that.”
“You need to go inside now. Just in case.” Said Saita.
Meedus squeezed her shoulder. “The pieces need to fall into place. Goodbye, Saita.”
“Goodbye, Meedus.” Saita couldn’t watch as he walked away.
Meedus had the answers, but for some reason, he wasn’t going to give them to her. He insisted that Saita and Kay work together. Taking a deep breath, Saita made sure the guards that would be covering them, then said.
“I’m ready.”
