Fledgling: Part 56

Greetings Readers!

Today, we get to see a portion of what Dragon Kay can do if she feels like it. With her ability to steal and control energy, she has several creative ways of fighting. Enjoy the update!

Then Kay launched herself from the window before anyone could stop her. Saita couldn’t help but notice a wicked grin on her face as she did so.

Kay had noticed the ripple in the air below as the portal closed. While she had hoped that she would see Red-Eye once more, it was a mottle black beast that already had a human in its mouth. It was so busy shaking the now silent guard that it never noticed the Dragon dropping from the window.

Kay wanted this fight to last, so she waited for the creature to notice her before she allowed the energy to drip from her fingers. The creature spat the guard from its mouth and grinned. It knew who she was, and it was pleased.

“Mistress.” It growled in a gargled voice, likely from all the blood in its mouth.
Kay leapt at the creature, using energy to propel herself forward rather than her feet. As the claws on her right hand made contact with the creature’s head, she knew that she needed to adjust her tactics. As soon as it touched the fur, it was absorbed. The beast turned to snap at her, but she grabbed the snout and head simultaneously and flipped over it. Except she didn’t release it. Using her momentum, as soon as her feet hit the ground, she threw the beast from her.

The Wolven, used to this level of combat, rightened in the air and dug all its claws into the stonework of the courtyard to stop its backward trajectory. Kay gave the beast no time to recover, as she smashed a bare foot into its snout, causing the head to snap back. Just enough for her to bury the fingers of her other hand into the base of its neck.

Blood spurted, and Kay immediately stepped back as she knew the creature would go on the assault now. The head snapped back with an open jaw, and Kay sidestepped just in time.

“Mistress!” It spoke once more.

“Nope.”

Pushing energy toward the underside of her feet, she leapt far farther into the air than would have been normal. The creature looked up at her, unable to reach her as she seemed to float over its head.

“What do you want?” she asked.

“Your return. It’s all we ever wanted.”

“All your pack ever wanted was to gain a foothold. It never did and it never will. Go back.”

The Wolven grinned and muttered. “Either you come and give up your essence, or I’ll take it to him.”

Kay snorted and shook her head. “Give it a try, and we’ll see how far you get. You forget who I am.”

“Was.” It grinned back at her.

Kay didn’t like that, not one bit. She disliked it even more when the Wolven used her own technique to boost itself into the sky after her. Or it would of if Saita hadn’t decided to join the fray. Kay didn’t even have time to tell her to stop before she crushed the creature’s head under her new foot.

Kay was about to tell her off when the Wolven reared and tried to grab at Saita. The previous Dragon didn’t know what came over her, but she dove down and shouldered the Wolven away. This time, it stayed down.

“Thank you.” Said Saita as she made her way to the corpse.

“Ah…don’t mention it.”

Saita spent a few minutes looking over the body before nodding her head. “This was one of those in the pack that attacked us. It clearly wanted you. Why?”

“Something about essence. It’s dead now, why does it matter?”

“It matters because this is but one creature, and if they are now aware that you are a separate person, they’re going to come after you.”

“I don’t need your help.”

“Good, because I wasn’t offering it.” She returned her attention to the body, sifting through fur, grey matter, and chunks of bone.

Kay wasn’t sure what she was looking for until Saita pulled a metal panel from the creature’s ruined head.

“That’s why it absorbed your claws. Looks like the Mad Pack has had a few upgrades. Which upgrades I am not too sure of.”

“That looks like a communication panel. The neurons are directly wired into it…oh…yikes. Yeah, we need to leave.”

“And show the guards how to fight these things.”

“Oh, no need. I need a crucifix.”

Saita got to her feet and frowned at Kay. She was also completely sure what she was thinking of, but regardless, she needed to protect the castle.

The courtyard was now filling with guards and the two kings quickly looked over the creature before asking the questions they had. At first, they had wanted to take the body to get a better understanding of it, but Dragon Kay had insisted that her plan would work better.

“The Wolven of my era know the way I think. Leaving a message will keep you far safer than trying to determine how to stop them with lab work. Someone get me a crucifix now.”

The kings from each other, then to Saita, who shrugged and said. “If you’re looking for guidance, speak to the queen. But honestly, she knows more about these things than either of us does. I’d do as she suggests.”

Now, if she had managed to keep her sanity while fighting Saita, it's likely she never would have stood a chance.
