Fledgling: Part 55
Hi all
Still very behind in Fledgling, as I went to Comicon yesterday. I will make up for it on Monday with an action-packed update!
Dragon Kay, as everyone had decided to call her to distinguish her from the queen, bore no will to anyone. It was a strange sensation. While she liked to say she had no feelings, she could feel hate and anger, or nothing. There hadn’t been much in between when she was young, and as she got older, she just got good at hiding any positive emotions, as they were rarely rewarded with anything other than malice.
Here it was different. While there were three women who looked remarkably similar, there was very little open distrust and there had been so much kindness. Something that Kay knew little about until she was older.
The kitchen staff quickly learned to keep all manner of snacks on themselves in case they ran into her. Kay was sure if it wasn’t for the insane metabolism she had thanks to her version of the System, she would have gotten fat in the weeks that she had been here. Currently, she was enjoying a freshly made caramel apple. This particular one seemed to have some sort of edible glitter inside the caramel that was just as sour as the apple itself. She loved every bite.
Kay explored every inch of the castle, ignoring any odd stares it got her. She had never been in a place like this before. After she had been taken from her home as a child, she had spent less than a year in a facility where doctors and scientists had tried to get her to use her ability. She knew that place had been a danger and once there weren’t so many eyes on her, she had slipped out one day. She would rather live on the streets than stay to find out what they would want from her.
Chucking an apple core out a window, Kay grimaced. The street hadn’t been easier. She had managed when she was older, but as a youngster, there had been a lot of predators, and she hadn’t been as smart as she was now.
Sharpening her energy claws on some stonework, she continued to meander through the castle, lightly tapping the stone with the talon tips on her right arm as she walked. Too long she had been cooped up, and this freedom was exhilarating. She had wanted to explore beyond the walls of the castle, but it was the one thing the queen had ordered her not to do.
While everything within her wanted to defy the queen, she found that she couldn’t really bring herself to do it. The queen was the first person beyond Red-Eye who treated her like a person. Kay could feel the madness within the queen that barely held in check. She knew it wouldn’t take too much for the queen to go down the same route that she had.
Just when Kay was about to find something else to eat, she ran into Saita, who was walking with one of the twins. Kay had never been one for finer details, and she struggled to tell the difference between the twin kings, but she didn’t really care.
Noticing the solo woman, the twin bowed his head in respect and Saita ignored her. Kay shrugged her annoyance away. Saita’s preference to ignore her was better than the fear she once held. It would be highly likely that the two would do no form of working together until it was forced upon them.
“How’s the leg?” she asked, not really caring.
Saita grumbled something but the twin took over.
“I’m surprised how quickly she was able to adapt. I thought she’d still be in bed for a few more days. Only too grateful you allowed us the change to build a more adaptable leg for you.” The twin looked at Saita.
The woman tapped her left foot against the ground a few times, but while the twin grimaced, she didn’t. There was no pain. Not in the mood to make conversation with her twin, Kay made her way away from the pair, when there was a call of panic from the courtyard beyond the window.
Curiosity more than fear made Kay walk to the open window and look down.
“Well now. This is about to get interesting.” She muttered.
What else could be happening now?
