Fledgling: Part 54
Greetings Reader!
I am way behind in my writing on Fledgling, and with guests showing up in the coming days, I don't see that changing until next week.
I do have a short update for all of you now, so I hope you enjoy it!
The general seemed to think this over for a few minutes before saying. “For years we have warred against the Kai slavers. The Dekai have tried to help, as have the Saith, but they have grown bold. Perhaps this child could help us.”
He then seemed to laugh and run his hands through his silver hair. “Heavens know I’m too old. What would be needed to ensure the child can be trained to become this weapon against the dragon?”
“A home, a stable one at that. I would also like to see her for myself.”
The general nodded his head. As soon as the hospital notifies me that it’s a good time to see her. Until then, shall we talk more about this Dragon?”
Shareik divulged everything he had come to learn about the Dragon and of the Champions that stood up to them. However, how a Champion was born, he kept to himself. The general had listened in silence, every now and again jotting down notes, or calling others into the office to discuss more about the Dragon. This carried on for days until finally, information from the hospital had been received.
The girl was awake.
Curiosity fuelled Shareik. He had seen glimpses of Saita and knew of her power from other Heavenly, but he knew very little of the one that had been leashed by her. Other than the title of Fell Dragon, he didn’t know too much about her.
As he and the general arrived at the hospital, the human was handed a report that he was going through. He was frowning but said nothing. Shareik could read his mind as if it were a book and knew that the injuries the child sustained were more than just what the Kai had done to her.
It had turned out that it was common knowledge that her father was an abusive man because of the drought that ruined his farm. The neighbours just kept to themselves, and the family distanced themselves, not wanting to get involved with the inevitable fallout that would occur.
“We will need to track down the various doctors who treated the worst of her injuries without reporting it.” Muttered the General.
Shareik almost rolled his eyes. The punishment would come too late, and it was clear the only reason no one in authority acted was because of the usefulness of Samantha’s father. He had to bite his tongue to prevent him from saying anything else.
When he was finally allowed to see the girl, he was shocked by what sat before him on the hospital bed. Golden hair, slight build, with manic blue eyes peeking between the oily stings of her hair. He immediately turned cold. Something was terribly wrong. While he knew that eventually she would become a Champion and replace the Dragon, he hadn’t expected her to exude anything.
There was power, yes, but it was like an empty pit. A yearning for everything she wanted, and Shareik was sure that she wanted everything within her grasp.
The general started talking to the girl, but she didn’t react to him. It appeared that she was within her own world, but Shareik knew better. He watched those predatory eyes follow the general as he paced and talked. If this girl had been an animal, the signs of an imminent attack would have been clear, but with no tail to swish or ears to lie flat against her head, there was no warning of what was to come.
The general, fury bubbling up that he was being ignored, didn’t see what Shareik saw and got too close. The screaming in the child’s face triggered a reaction. Teeth flashed, a scream sounded, and the general fell back with his lower lip torn away from his chin and blood oozing in large volumes from the wound.
Shareik should have been shocked by the piece of flesh dangling from the general’s chin, but he was captivated by the girl. While there hadn’t been a dramatic spray of blood, enough of it had landed on her face to create a wide smear across her lower face, with some splatter radiating up into the rest of her face. She was smiling with her teeth bared, as if she had won some kind of prize.
Several doctors had stepped forward to control her, but she didn’t fight them. Instead, she continued to bare her teeth at the general, while he was handed a towel to press to his face. He didn’t look frightened. Instead, he looked triumphant and would have been smiling if his face would have allowed it.
“Oh, I think you and I are going to become very good friends, Samantha.”
And where will we go from here? I will have to think about it.
