Fledgling: Part 51

Hi Readers

I hope that the week has been amazing! I have fallen behind in my writing, but here is an update on what is happening with the three Saita's. From here we will be moving onto how Dragon Kay was chosen to be what she eventually became.

Queen Kay found that she enjoyed the presence of the Fell Dragon. While immature, snarky, and sarcastic, she had a quick wit and took no nonsense from anyone. She carried herself as the most powerful person in the room, despite Saita dogging her steps.

The queen was amazed at the transformation that had come over Saita once Dragon Kay was free. For all her earlier bravado, she was completely meek now. It was as if she was waiting for the final shoe to drop with the emergence of her once arch nemesis.

Dragon Kay didn’t seem to care. She took her time gorging on physical food and killing off random weeds and bugs when she came across them with her abilities. The queen knew that she was deeply disturbed, but she also knew that there was a story there. One that would likely never be shared if Saita didn’t grow a backbone and soon.

“You keep staring at me.” Said Dragon Kay.

“I have honestly never seen someone put away the amount of food that you do.”
Dragon Kay was about to comment on the queen’s impressive girth when Saita elbowed her. The Dragon growled and rolled her eyes before starting on another plate of food. If she had ever been taught table manners, it wasn't evident in how she dug around in the plate.

“So let me understand this.” State the queen. “You can call your retainer.”

“Red-Eye isn’t a retainer. He’s more of a guard dog but with more personality and intelligence.” Said the Dragon, with a mouth full of food.

“The problem is that if she does call him, the pack that caused Meedus and I to become separated will locate us and thus come to your time. It’s not something I can risk.” Said Saita.

“You speak as if you have power here.” Said the queen.

Saita pursed her lips and took a deep breath. She needed to learn her place in a time that wasn’t her own.

“Ha!” laughed Kay as she pointed a poultry bone at her.

“Manners!” snapped the queen.

The Dragon immediately dropped the bone, and her head lowered. Surprising everyone, even her. She sneered at herself and reached for a serviette to clean her hands. She was embarrassed that the scared little girl had bled through, even for a second.

“Are there alternatives?” asked the queen.

The Dragon hummed under her breath for a few minutes before saying, “He remembers my scent. It’ll take longer, but it won’t alert the crazed pack.”

“Do you know anything about the crazed pack?” asked Saita.

“Some. Not a lot. They were around in my early years as I was getting accustomed to the cage. They were followers of the previous Dragon. It took a long time to bend them to my will. Some of them didn’t have the minds to handle what I put the Wolven through. Some broke. Some disappeared. This small pack is likely of those that broke but hung around to feed like the rest. If I’m right, they’re the oldest of the packs.”

“Packs?” asked Saita.

“You thought they were just one giant community that lived around the cage and the time corridors? Naïve.” The Dragon shook her head. “There were several family groups that came and went as I needed them. Within each family group, there were several packs. They would interbreed as needed. I couldn’t keep all of them in line while I slept. However, the moment I awoke, the majority were always ready for my call.”

“How did you manage all of that?” asked the queen.

“Good question.” The Dragon shrugged. “From what I learned, much later after my first imprisonment, the System Saita and I have come with a controller module.”

Dragon Kay touched the base of her neck. “It sat here. While the spinal implant controlled the rest of the system, the controller module exerted the will of the wielder of my collar. This module was also used to leash the Dragon within the cage. From what I gather, it acts like a shock collar once within the cage. Your DNA or something like that is uploaded into the schematics of the cage, allowing certain access. However, mine was severely damaged when I was placed in the cage. Likely why I was able to fight as much as I could but that also led to the voices.”

“Voices?” asked Saita.

The Dragon tapped her head, “Within the cage, the essence of the Dragons before me still existed. They were a constant in my head, and I don’t think they were supposed to be. Questions were always a headache when thousands of voices tried to answer at the same time. Sometimes, sometimes, I would lose myself in them.”

The last sentence was said so softly that Saita had barely heard it. The queen, however, had. She knew what it was like to lose herself to madness. It was because of this madness that she never had the closure she needed with Edzeeker. It was a wound that still festered decades after she had torn him apart.

“So, in essence, we’re waiting?” she asked.

The Dragon kicked her chair out just enough to place her feet on the table and rock back a little. “Yup.”

And now we dive into how Dragon Kay was selected as the next Dragon. Warning, the following chapters may be too gruesome for some readers.
