Fledgling: Part 47
Hello Readers
And we're back with Saita! She is faced not by Dragon Kay but by a mistake which likely changed the entire course of her existence. Oh well, that's the risk of travelling within one's own timeline.
Enjoy the update!
Saita sat with her head in her hands. It ached, but she refused to get any sleep. The whole process had taken several minutes before the Heavenly had stepped back. It allowed her to come to her senses, but by then, she had found herself alone with the Shareik.
He seemed nervous and fidgety. He clearly didn’t want to be in her presence, and she couldn’t blame him. The last time they had seen each other, she was barely alive, and she was sure he felt guilty to some extent.
She had wanted to talk to him, but he had stepped back with a bow and simply said, “It’s best if we don’t come into contact with each other for a while.”
Then, he had disappeared as suddenly as he had appeared. She would never understand how the Heavenly thought. She had sat down as the pain in her head started to peak but was interrupted from her thoughts as a servant knocked and entered.
“Meedus seeks an audience.”
She had jumped to her feet and asked to be taken to him. However, by the time she had gotten to the hospital, the old man had just nodded off. She had made herself comfortable in the room. She watched the rain falling beyond the window, trying to find something that looked familiar to the time she grew up in, but there was nothing. Edzeeker had destroyed this world thoroughly.
She had lost herself in the rain for a while. She had always loved the rain. It was a reason to stay indoors and goof off a little. It wasn’t until much later in her union with Bolx that she discovered his love for snow. It was the reason they had moved to the cabin in the later part of their life together.
“Saita…” said a tired voice behind her.
Rubbing at her eye, Saita turned her chair to face her father’s old advisor.
“I’m glad you’re okay.” She said softly.
“Where are we?” said Meedus as he sat up and rubbed at his head.
“Try again, old man.”
Meedus looked at her for a few minutes before asking, “When are we?”
Saita explained when she had come here the first time and how they had returned here. Meedus seemed to absorb this and nodded his head.
“This must have happened around about the time you took me.” He said. “Had I known any of this, I would have…”
“I know, and likely I would have been found a lot more quickly, had less damage done to me.”
Meedus looked her up and down before stating, “Your mind seems less jumbled.”
“Yeah, a weight has left it.”
“That sounds far more ominous than what I like.”
Saita chuckled.
“You know I can’t go back now, right?”
That statement hurt. She knew it to be true. She had travelled in her own time and removed the one person who could have helped find her quicker. If she were to replace him now, the damage to the timeline would be impossible to predict.
“I’m sorry.” She said softly.
“You knew the risk. What were you thinking?”
“I didn’t mean…” she stopped herself. She took a deep breath and continued. “I’m sorry. I took your life from you, and that wasn’t fair.”
Meedus looked annoyed and then flopped back against the pillows there. “Do I even have any family left here?”
“No. No one.”
The old man sighed heavily again, reminding Saita of how he had been when he was her teacher all those decades ago.
“What happened to my family after I was taken?”
Saita smiled softly. “Doran became my right-hand man. He was my advisor for decades before I forced him to retire and enjoy his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He managed to reach a century old. He outlived his wife and one son.”
Meedus nodded his head. “Was I buried with my wife?”
“I don’t know. I wasn’t around when your absence was noticed. I think the lizards were blamed, and you were noted as MIA.”
Meedus snorted. Saita was sure he had already gleaned a lot of information when he had first laid eyes on her but was not asking for specific information about his situation. For a time, they sat in silence before he asked.
“What now? What will happen to me? Do I become one of your companions on this adventure?”
Saita wasn’t sure if he was bitter and wasn’t sure how to answer him. Thankfully, an interruption stopped that from making it her responsibility.
“I was hoping to take you for myself.”
