Fledgling: Part 42
Greetings Readers
A small history flashback to show the type of interaction Kay would have with Bolx. Enjoy the update!
Bolx had fallen asleep holding vigil next to his wife’s hospital bed. He had hoped that she would return to her senses, but he had waited so long, he had fallen asleep. He awoke with a start, with his head cushioned by a pillow. He sat up with a gasp to find Saita standing by the window. He had hoped that she was back to herself but when she spoke, he knew the Fell Dragon was still in control.
“Sleep well, Sleeping Beauty?”
Grumbling to himself, he rubbed at his eyes and yawned.
The Fell Dragon turned and observed him for a few minutes before he asked, “What time is it?”
Kay looked around and shrugged, indicating that there were no clocks in the room. She then made her way to the bed and sat down. Bolx was frustrated. He desperately needed to know what was going on, but he knew it was of no use trying to threaten Kay.
He remembered how scared she had been the night before. When the Fell Dragon had been an abstract thought in his head, he had never dreamed of it being afraid. But now, as he watched the woman who was meant to be his partner picking at the linen in frustration, he was starting to understand what Saita had tried to explain to him about the different Fell Dragons and how they came into being.
“Would you like a book?”
“I’m functionally illiterate.” She said. “I can maybe handle a third-grade level book, no more.”
That caught him off guard, but Kay swung herself to lie on the bed and look at the ceiling.
“Then what were you doing all this time while you were in the cage?”
“Sleeping mostly, and when I was awake, I hunted Fledglings and Champions.”
Bolx didn’t know what to say to her, but he knew what he had promised his wife.
“There will come a time in your future where I won’t be myself. It will be hard, but I want you to understand it isn’t her fault. She is as broken as the rest of us. Be her friend. Promise me that you will do this. I know it’s an odd request, and it’ll be difficult for you, but please. Do it for me.”
That conversation wasn’t that far in his past. He sighed and then asked, “What about something to eat?”
Kay looked at him with his wife’s face and she grimaced, “Eat? I don’t eat. I steal energy. Like this.”
She grabbed his arm, but nothing seemed to happen. Confused, she looked at her hand.
“You’re not in your own body, so I can assume that you can’t use your abilities. Or unless Saita permits you, you can’t use your abilities.”
Kay sighed heavily and said, “Fine. I’ll eat.”
Bolx left the room long enough to inform the nurses that Saita wanted to eat something. As it was their queen, they made sure the food arrived swiftly.
Kay tore into the meal as if it was the first time she had eaten in years, and Bolx couldn’t help but wonder if it was. Plate after plate came into the room until the Dragon held a hand up, indicating that she was done. However, she couldn’t help but notice the grins on the faces of those leaving the room.
“What are they smiling about?” she asked.
Bolx blushed and looked away. Kay pushed aside the table that was over the bed, climbed onto all fours, and glared at him.
“Didn’t you two just have a set of twins?” she asked.
“They’re four.”
“Oh God, are we pregnant?” she sat back hurriedly.
“Not as of the last time we tested.”
“Oh, good. That would just make this whole situation so much more awkward. Fuck me!” she flopped back on the bed and looked at the ceiling once more.
“What did you mean that you were functionally illiterate?” asked Bolx, looking for anything to use to connect with the stranger before him.
“Was never taught to read. Kinda had to figure it out on my own, and well, I didn’t exactly have freedom for very long.” She ran her hands along the sides of her neck. “Oh yeah, I’m not in my own body.”
“What school doesn’t teach a child to read?”
“I wasn’t allowed to go to school.”
“And your parents?”
“Parent, and not, he wouldn’t have dared to send me to school. Not with what he left on my skin.”
Bolx quickly realised this wasn’t the sort of conversation that would end well, so he got to his feet. Just as he did that, his toddlers ran into the room.
“Look Bolx, I don’t know what is going on, but you can’t keep it a secret if my daughter is in hospital. What is it?” said Myla as she entered the room.
Oh no.
Bolx tried to stop the twins from getting onto the bed but his daughter and son out maneuvered him and dragged themselves up to sit close to who they thought was their mother.
“Saasha, Kaiden, get down.” He said sharply.
He felt his heart skip a beat when Kay reached for the twins to pull them into her lap. She hugged them tightly before letting them go. She then looked up at Myla then effortlessly started lying through her teeth.
“I woke up in the middle of the night with the urge to vomit. Horribly sick. I got light-headed, and Bolx surprised me. I fell back and hit my head. The old softly thought I had gotten a concussion. I’m only here as a precaution.”
She then grinned, “And no, Mom, not pregnant, not yet. Likely something I ate last night didn’t agree with me.”
Bolx was almost impressed with how she quickly mimicked Saita’s voice and pattern of speech. It was terrifying, making him wonder if she was truthful about never having done this before.
Myla playfully slapped Bolx’s shoulder and said, “I told you before not to sneak up on her.”
“Yeah, yeah, totally my fault.” He said as he tried to collect his children, terrified of what would happen if Kay decided she was done with this charade.
His daughter, Saasha, decided that she would rather cuddle her mother and tucked herself under Kay’s arm and tightly against her ribs. Kaiden didn’t mind going to his father.
“I cannot believe how golden your hair is.” Said Kay as she ran a spare hand through Saasha’s hair. “Like mine when I was young.”
“I think you woke from a nightmare, and you don’t want to have to admit it.” Said Myla as she sat down.
Kay looked up and Bolx, and the look on her face was one of panic. He didn’t know much about her past, but clearly, it was painful, and she was out of her depth being in the current situation she was in.
“Myla, the kids were with a sitter and safe. Why did you bring them?”
“I know I crossed a boundary, and I’m sorry, but I sort of expected to hear something from you. It’s been a day since Saita ended up in hospital, and not a word from you.”
“That’s on me. I’m sorry…”
“He fell asleep.” Said Kay suddenly, as if thinking that would help the conversation.
Not helping.
Kay reached for her head, not sure where the voice had come from. Myla got to her feet and said, “Oh, let me have a look.”
The change was almost spontaneous. Kay tried to pull away, but a different force had her sit forward. Then a look of confusion crossed her face, and Bolx knew that his wife was back.
“Saita, you hit your head, your mom just makes to make sure everything is okay.” He quickly said before she could say anything.
His wife seemed to relax and leaned forward for her mother to examine her. Bolx breathed a sigh of relief, hoping that this would be the last time he would have to deal with Kay, but knowing that it wouldn’t be.
