Fledgling: Part 31
Greeting Readers
We continue with Kay's confusion over suddenly having control of Saita's body, while the queen is hiding somewhere in the depths of her mind. Let's continue
“What’s all the racket about? The two of you could wake the dead!” came a voice from the other side of the room.
She knew that voice and remembered the kindness it had shown her in her final minutes.
“I’m not sure.” Said Bolx softly. “She woke screaming and now doesn’t seem herself.”
Fear, unlike any she had felt since her father was alive, descended upon her, and she scrambled to get her feet under her. She then made to push past the giant Saith, but he grabbed her.
“Hey now, calm down.”
She leaned over and bit into the arm grabbing her. She knew she had done some serious damage when blood spurted into her mouth, but the giant only grunted in pain and lifted her to her feet.
“Yeah, time to see Jara.”
She didn’t know who this Jara was, but she didn’t want to see them. She unclamped her jaws and said loudly, “No!”
Doran, now in the room, flinched as if slapped. She knew then that though her face was Saita, her voice clearly wasn’t. She clenched her teeth and tried to struggle out of the giant’s grip.
“Jara.” Agreed the human.
Unable to break from the giant’s single powerful arm, she eventually gave up and hung limply, hoping that her dead weight would make them second guess themselves. The pair seemed to march her from the room and down a long corridor, not engaging with her at all.
She didn’t want to be caught out. She was getting used to feeling sensations again. She was overwhelmed and the old fears were starting to creep in. She thought she had lost her ability to feel anything; the only gift her father had ever given her. She didn’t like this feeling this way.
“I don’t want to go.” She said softly.
That made both the men pause in their stride.
Desperation flared, and she begged, “I don’t know why I am here, but don’t take me to Jara.”
The giant put her on the ground and then turned her to face him. He stared at her for a long time and then looked up at Doran.
“The voice?”
“The voice.” Confirmed the human.
The Saith looked at her once more, and for a moment, a small moment, there was a look of disgust and fury, but then it was quickly replaced with one of pity.
“Jara is your house doctor.” He said softly.
“Don’t make me go.” She begged.
The intense fear she was starting to understand wasn’t only hers but also of the young queen, fleeing from the nightmares she had had to endure for decades. Kay had had enough and tried to force herself back into Saita’s mind, but the queen was unmoving.
“Kay?” asked Bolx after some time of silence.
Her head snapped at him, shocked that he would have known anything about her. While she hadn’t been aware for a long time, she was sure that Saita would never speak about her due to fear and shame.
“It is you, isn’t it?”
She wanted to bolt. The fear was overwhelming, and she felt herself quivering under the thin clothes she was wearing.
“I can’t believe it. I didn’t want to believe it when you told me.” Said Doran.
Doran gripped her shoulders and turned her to look at him. He eased the fear considerably, and Kay didn’t understand why. The human looked her up and down for a few minutes, and a soft smile came to his face.
“Well now, this is a conundrum.” Said Doran as he let go of her. “How did this even happen?”
“Nightmares. Was a particularly bad one as I couldn’t wake her to offer any comfort. She must have fled into the depths of her mind where Kay was resting.”
Anger flared then, and Kay couldn’t help but growl, “Don’t talk about me as if I’m not here.”
Then she vomited.
It didn’t stop, and soon she was driven to her knees, with her head aching. If these were the feelings and sensations she had missed out on, she was happy to let them go.
“Concussion. Tried to step away from me, got tangled up in her own feet, and hit her head on the basin. She’s lucky she wasn’t knocked out or worse. Come on you.”
Bolx effortlessly lifted her with his single arm and carried her the rest of the way they had been heading to. Kay tried to understand what was going on. Both these men seemed to know about her and Saita’s link, and she had no idea why. Did the Heavenly tell them? Did Saita? No, she was sure the queen never breathed a word of their combined existence.
Jara wasn’t told the whole story when Kay was delivered to him. Bolx explained that Saita had woken from nightmares, and when he had tried to intervene, she had hit the back of her head against the basin. Not entirely a falsehood, but just enough truth that the doctor didn’t query her vomiting and miserable state.
Jara did a variety of tests but grew concerned when Kay couldn’t recall anything from a few days ago. Completely normal for Kay as she wasn’t conscious at all during that time but a worry from the doctor’s standpoint. Unable to dispel the doctor’s concern, Doran and Bolx could do nothing but agree when Jara insisted that Kay go to the hospital to have her head looked at.
Doran came with her and Jara while Bolx organised that a child caretaker would look in on their twins when they woke in the morning.
Kay could do nothing but go along with the plan as her head ached, and while the vomiting was no longer producing much, what bile was produced stung her throat and made her feel weak. The urge to run was strong, so strong that she almost bolted when they got to the hospital.
Doran gripped her arm and simply whispered, “Stay.”
Well, well, Bolx knows all about Kay. How did that happen?
