Fledgling: Part 27
Greetings All!
A small update for today. Hoping to write more over the weekend!
Saita woke with the ribs along her left side aching. She sat up with a groan before noticing the room wasn’t her usual one. She paused and then all the memories flooded back. She was stuck in this time and had no idea how she would get back.
The thought horrified her, and she felt the panic building in her chest. She needed to find the rest of her companions but didn’t know how to. She flopped back onto the bed with a groan as the stitches all over her body strained.
“What am I going to do?” she whispered as tears came to her eye.
She knew this quest was the only way to get her son and husband back. If she couldn’t do that…she didn’t want to think of the possibility. She rubbed the tears from her eye and sat up once more. There was one more thing that she could do but she didn’t know if it would cause more complications along the way. She needed Shareik to undo what he had done to seal her ability to travel through time.
She ground her teeth. She couldn’t trust Shareik but what choice did she have? She remembered that Queen Kay had summoned him to her the last time Saita had been here, and she wondered if the queen still held that power or if that had been the power of the favour she carried.
She got to her feet and grimaced as a jolt of cold pain travelled up her left leg. She looked at the limb miserably. It had always hurt, and it didn’t matter what replacements she tried, the pain never stopped.
Sighing, she got to her feet and made her way to the door of the room. Once she opened it, she was surprised to see that a servant was leaning against the wall, as if waiting for her.
“Can I help you?” she asked, forgetting everything she had been taught when she was queen.
“Oh! You’re awake!” the servant stammered. “The royals wish for you to have breakfast with them, but I didn’t want to wake you.”
Saita looked over herself and for a moment wanted to decline as she was still wearing the clothes from yesterday and was barefoot. It didn’t feel right to invade a royal breakfast with the way she was dressed. However, before she could say anything, the servant nodded his head knowingly.
“I will inform the kitchens to start the cooking process while you bathe.”
“But I…”
“Clothes will be left outside your bathroom door. Clothes that will be more appropriate for breakfast.”
That sentence had been used on Saita far more often than she would willing to admit, so she sighed and nodded her head.
“Very good.” The servant then disappeared down the hallway.
Saita only shook her head and chuckled. Her kitchen staff had done similar things to her and her children. Bolx had adapted more quickly to the role of her Warlord and King Consort, and he hadn’t been babied as she was. Eventually, the children grew to be like their father, but, she continued to let the castle have their fun with her.
Resigned to her fate, Saita decided to enjoy a soak. Perhaps that would alleviate the ache that was making her left knee throb.
She made her way to the ensuite bathroom and was relieved that there was a bathtub. She turned the taps, allowing the water to fill the tub. Now and again, she would test the temperature of the water, making it as hot as she could stand, knowing that it was the only way to alleviate the ache in her leg.
It was after she had stripped and was lying in the bath when she heard a servant enter the room and leave something on the other side of the bathroom door. Once they were gone, Saita allowed her mind to wander to nothing and everything. The scars and marks upon her skin always did that.
She had tried for years to erase the marks, but nothing she did ever managed it. While there were times of severe injury that they retreated toward her chest, they never truly disappeared. She played around with different patterns that the crystalize energy grew in until she found something that resembled Silens’s patterns.
She remembered the old warrior fondly. She had been so helpful with the twins, trying to teach them much about where their blood had come from. They had barely gotten into the Royal Guard Academy when Baks passed of old age. After that, Silens was seen less and less frequently, until one day she disappeared. There had never been a body and therefore never a funeral. Saita often wondered what happened to the old woman, but was sure if, at the time, the castle guard had searched the forest close to the Academy, they would have found what was left of the old warrior.
Saita reminiscing over a past she wishes she could return to.
