Fledgling: Part 123

Greeting Readers!

Look is finally updating on time! It has been a slog trying to go back and write the other characters into the story after completing one of the timelines and forgetting there were others that needed to be wrapped up. However, we are slowly getting there and making up for lost time!

I hope you all enjoy the update today!

It had been a long time since she had felt this much self-hatred. She had thought that she had outgrown it, but clearly, she hadn’t. She took a deep breath and continued to rattle her brain. The cave they were in now had been abandoned for a while, and it would likely make a good place to shelter until an idea came to her.

They needed supplies, but how? This wasn’t a timeline that Saita knew. She had only shown up here the first time because Fledge had helped her get here with Kay’s assistance. She knew nothing about it or how the twins had gotten the supplies. They had only told her that she had provided it. Nothing more than that.

She needed a resource, but how? She was alone. She had sent everyone away. Her husband, son, twins, Red-Eye, and even Kay. Hell, she was even starting to miss the sarcastic Dragon. She flinched as Martin pulled the last stitch tight. He wasn’t being gentle.

“Thank you.”

“It’ll scar with the cauterising I did earlier. You should have let it heal instead of insisting that I open it to stitch it.”

“We found a decent first aid kit. And as you said, it wasn’t going to hold. Not if we are to build a shelter.”

“With what exactly?” demanded Maxine, pointing toward the entrance of the cave. “We have no tools. Sure, we can blast a few trees down, but I don’t see an overnight shelter being much more than what we can build with what we have.”

Saita ground her teeth. The girl was right. She needed to come up with a plan. Her original goal was achieved, and now, she was trying to set up the very foundation of what made it possible for her husband and son to be saved. But she had no idea how she and the twins had managed it. Maxine and Martin never told her more than she had brought the supplies.

“For now, food and firewood are what we need.” Martin said as he handed Saita a thick coat.

“Martin, she’s brought us here to die…”

“We were dead anyway.” Snapped Martin. “And if you had…”

The boy caught himself before he could finish the sentence. Maxine’s face flushed with colour, and she said lowly. “Complete that sentence.”

Martin turned away, knowing that he had almost spoken what he was thinking.

“Don’t be a coward.” Maxine rushed to her feet. “Say it. Say that you blame me for all of this happening. If I had stayed home like a good little girl, I would have been at home when the beasts came for our family. I could have done something.”

Saita stood up and pulled the jacket on. “You would have died too.”

Maxine turned her fury on Saita, lunging at her. Saita simply directed the energy-powered fist away from her, tripping Maxine as she stumbled forward. The girl landed with a heavy thud. Instead of springing to her feet and lunging at the woman again, she curled up, and heavy sobs echoed in the cave.

“It’s all my fault.”

Martin opened his mouth to say something, but stopped. Saita was sure that there was some resentment. After all, it had been Maxine who had exposed him and the rest of their family to Brucel when they had been a secret for most of their lives.

“The fault is with the Fell Dragon.” Said Saita. “There is no one else to blame.”

Martin nodded his head and went to sit next to his sobbing sister. He was trying to hold back his own tears. Saita sighed. She needed to help them. Leaving them here like this would leave them open to not only the wilderness but also their own emotions.

Then it hit her. She had resources. She wasn’t alone. The labels on some of the medications she had seen were Saith. That meant the resources, or at least the medicine, were from Saith, and she already had two people who knew exactly what would be needed for this mission in place. She grinned.

“Do the two of you have enough strength to gather what is needed for at least a night’s survival?”

Martin nodded his head. “But where are you going?”

“I’m going to ask you two for help.” She grinned.

Martin shook his head slowly and placed a hand on his sister. “I knew you said it was going to get weird from here, but I think I have lost what understanding I thought I had.”

“I’ll be back. Protect each other.”

We are almost done with the arch with the twins. This leaves us Shareik's arch, Saita's arch with Kaiden, Saita's arch with Matta, and Kay's arch in Silen's time, and then the conclusion. I hope you will all remain until the end!
