Fell Dragon Book 8 Part 38

Hi all

It has been a crazy weekend, and despite taking some time for myself on Monday, I don't feel rested at all.

We are entering the final arch of Fell Dragon, where we will discover the final piece of what Fell Dragons are and why they are needed. I hope you all enjoy!

The mournful howling echoed through the dungeons. It wasn’t ear-splitting, but the mournful sound cut through Doran’s soul. The fact that the Fell Dragon had begged for his freedom with her last breath was enough to tell him how she had felt about the creature held captive.

With nothing else to go on, Doran had his injuries seen to and returned to Saith. He needed to talk to Lardan and Red Eye. He had left Jarah and his terrible secret to deal with the Fell Dragon’s remains and Saita’s parents.

Lardan had been furious at first that Siar had blatantly ignored his orders, but Doran had explained that there was no other way. He had been grateful she had managed what she had. Despite this, Lardan had given her an earful before sending her to the field to deal with the remnants of the pack that was still running around, but to a far lesser capacity. It was as if when the Fell Dragon had passed, they had started to regain their senses and were starting to realise the danger they had placed themselves in.

Lardan looked as if he was at the end of his rope when Doran told him about what he had seen. He then mentioned that there was one more place he could look for Saita, but he would need the Wolven to be freed. Lardan wanted to argue. Everything within his being had wanted nothing more than disposing of the Wolven. It had killed his parents and he wanted it dead. However, if there was a chance that he could save Saita from becoming what the Fell Dragon was, he knew he had to put his personal feelings aside. There was even a chance of saving his brother.

He had escorted Doran to the dungeon and stood back as Doran came to stand before the grid. The Wolven was howling softly as he sat against the wall. He paused when he saw the human soldier and asked softly, “My mistress is at peace now, isn’t she?”

“I was with her when she passed.”

Doran removed the favour from his pocket and held it up for the Wolven to sniff. The Wolven got to his feet and rested his hands against the grid to get a better smell of what Doran offered him. Once he picked up his mistress’s scent he collapsed and rested his head against the metal. Doran wondered if the creature could cry when strange sounds came from its mouth.

“We need your help.” Said Doran. “We can stop the creation of the new Fell Dragon, we can save Saita this fate, but you have to help us.”

“All my mistress ever wanted was peace, to be free. I will help you for granting her that and being there when I couldn’t be.”

“Can you get us to the cage?”

“I don’t have much power left, but I can.”

Lardan stiffened. He didn’t want the Wolven to be free again. Red-Eye noticed this and said softly, “I am nothing without her. I will submit to the collar, the muzzle, and cuffs when I return. All I want is to be with her. If you bury her, I wish to be beside her.”

“Do you trust him?” Lardan asked Doran.

“What choice do I have?” Doran was exhausted and in pain.

“You need to take a Saith with you.”

“I can only take one.” Said Red-Eye.

Lardan looked torn, so Doran said, “Let me take the risk. I’m either right or…”

“We have to prepare for a new threat. Fine.” Lardan indicated that one of his soldiers could open the grid.

The Saith gave the Wolven a sideways glance and opened the cage it was in. Doran didn’t give the Wolven a chance to step out, but rather stepped in and said, “We have to go now.”

“Time works differently in the cage than out here.” Was all the creature said as it closed its eye. “I must find a veil and to do that, I need the collar and muzzle removed."

“I must get to the field Doran.” Said Lardan as he gripped the human’s shoulder. “Please, if nothing else, bring home something we can bury. If you can’t save her…even if it means I lose my brother.”

Doran hated the implication but knew what it was he needed to do. Saita had asked it of him, and he would do what he could to ensure that the Fell Dragon lineage was done. He patted the knife at his side. The same weapon that had been given to him on the Dekai home world.

Doran reached up and unbuckled the muzzle and then the collar. He knew if the Wolven was tricking him, this would be his end. However, all Red-Eye did was rub at the fur over his snout before he started concentrating.

“I have it.” Said the Wolven.

Red-Eye slowly dragged his claws down the air, splitting it open. Doran set the collar and muzzle on the ground and stepped through the veil. The Wolven gave one look to Lardan and said, “I keep my word. I will be back.”

He then followed Doran.

Now to try and find Saita.
