A Peaceful Day in Tavertet

Hello dear travel enthusiasts. I’d like to share our trip to a charming village in the Catalonia region. The village is called Tavertet. Located in the Alt Empordà area, about 100 kilometers from Barcelona, it sits at an altitude of 869 meters above sea level. Around 150 people live here, making it quite a small village. When we arrived, the weather was cooler compared to other places and rain was expected in the afternoon. Tavertet has informational signs, particularly ones that show hiking routes.

We came across a tour bus, likely bringing in tourists. The group looked like retired travelers. Our group on the other hand, consisted of five people. We found a lovely restaurant called Can Miquel, which had a charming terrace shaded by a chestnut tree. The iconic burro català, a symbol of Catalonia, was present here as well. There were insect traps hanging in the restaurant. After finishing our coffee we continued exploring the village.

The atmosphere here is tranquil, with very few tourists around. The village is entirely made up of stone houses called mas. These are old farmhouses built in the 18th century and every corner is picture-perfect. We ventured outside the village toward the natural landscapes. Although Tavertet is not widely known as a tourist destination, tour groups visit during the summer. It’s a great spot for those who want to enjoy nature. The mountains and valleys here resemble the famous Rupit village but cover a larger area.

From here we set out on hiking trails to discover new views. After taking photos with our friends, we continued walking. The wind was blowing gently, cooling the air. Along the way, we spotted a few mountain goats and the scenery was breathtaking. The cliffs here are about 200 meters high, making it an incredible experience. We headed toward the next viewpoint.

Eventually we found a small bar. We decided to take a break with some refreshing drinks. This place was peaceful.

It’s such a charming spot. There’s an organic vibe to it and it’s genuinely wonderful. We sat in the shade, enjoying the beautiful view. It seems there are events held here in the evenings because there’s a stage. We wanted to order cocktails, but they’re only served in the evenings. We tried the drinks instead, paying 12 euros for three, which wasn’t bad at all.

The view was absolutely stunning. We reached a viewpoint with benches, a perfect spot to admire the scenery. There was also an information board where you could learn more about the surrounding areas. Soon, the sky began to darken and we could hear thunder rumbling in the distance.

A gentle breeze picked up, but it didn’t bother us. We continued our walk immersed in nature. Along the way, we saw clean and well-kept cows resting on a lush green meadow with bells around their necks. After taking some photos, we started heading back to the village. The air was becoming more humid and oppressive, much like it had been yesterday before the rain.

We returned to the village and decided to sit at the same restaurant. We placed our orders and enjoyed the restaurant's beautiful decor, featuring large pinecones and a romantic atmosphere. After our meal we learned that there was a church and a waterfall nearby, but due to the weather conditions, we decided to skip them this time.

For five people including food, dessert, wine and coffee, we paid 61 euros. The meals were excellent. The expected rain began, accompanied by hail.

While strolling through the village, we came across an adorable black donkey. We thought about bringing it some food, but unfortunately, we had nothing with us. Perhaps next time, we’ll bring something for it.

Tavertet is definitely a place we’d love to visit again. It will likely be even more beautiful in autumn when the leaves turn golden. That’s all for today. Thank you for joining us on this journey. See you on the next adventure.
