A Beautiful Day in Rupit
Hello dear travelers. Today I’d like to tell you about a walk we took in Rupit. It had been a while since my last visit here and every time I come back, I try to bring friends and acquaintances with me because this village always feels so special to me. The natural scenery here is absolutely delightful and today I went for a walk with a friend.
My friend was really lucky with the weather, the sky finally cleared up a bit. There was no rain today, unlike the previous months when it rained non-stop. Not a single day passed without a drop of rain falling from the sky. Although the forecast didn’t predict rain, it still often ended up raining. So we began our hike enjoying the nice weather, heading toward a waterfall.
Our plan was as follows: cross the mountain river to the other side, visit the waterfall and explore its surroundings. I expected the river to be fast-flowing and cold. There's quite a noticeable difference in temperature between the sea level and the mountains.
After walking a bit we saw the first waterfall. People were stopping by with their cars to admire it, but it’s impossible not to pause and enjoy the view. Birds were singing and the sound of the rushing water below created a wonderful atmosphere. I should note that the river here is currently very powerful and full of water. Everything around is beautiful and filled with flowers.
I showed my friend some cotton-like balls hanging on pine trees. These are actually something dangerous. This is important information for anyone visiting nature in Catalonia: In spring or summer poisonous caterpillars live in these pines. When they feel threatened, they release microscopic hairs into the air. Humans or dogs can be exposed to these hairs, which can cause severe allergic reactions. In dogs, this exposure can even be fatal. People can also be sensitive to them.
Another fascinating detail: When the caterpillars move from one tree to another, they line up one after another. In nature, you might encounter an endless "chain" of caterpillars. Absolutely do not touch them or get too close. If you have a dog, don't let it sniff them or approach them. These nests can also be found on pine trees in nearby towns like Montseny. Municipalities usually spray pesticides in these areas as a precaution, but seeing them alive in nature was very interesting.
Our dog was completely enchanted, running and jumping around here. Recently, he chased some cows, ran through the fields, got covered in mud and I was wondering how I'd get him home, maybe wrap him in a garbage bag? But he seemed like he was outside for the first time, full of joy and energy. This place feels so different from the rest of Spain. Coming here means experiencing a different side of Spain. I highly recommend it.
Tourists were photographing the canyon, the landscape was definitely worth capturing. What awaited us here? A delicious lunch. We decided to sit on a rock to eat. I spotted the perfect stone, but to reach it, we had to walk along a path right next to a cliff. I’ve walked this trail several times before and find it exciting, but it’s definitely not for those afraid of heights. Suddenly the cliff drops sharply downward, revealing the shimmering surface of the river below. And we enjoyed our meal with this incredible panoramic view, really breathtaking.
They say swimming here is forbidden, but we watched people doing it anyway. The river flows extremely fast. I've never seen anything like it before. Maybe it’s better not to go in.
After lunch we started crossing the river. We carefully made our way across, step by step. We didn’t really have another choice. Then I tried to convince my friend to take a short detour into the forest. Since we had already crossed the mountain river, walking through the forest wouldn’t be too difficult. Many people pass through here from the woods anyway. Okay, maybe we’re getting older now. We even brought towels. We brought everything we needed. After drying off thoroughly, we continued watching the waterfall.
We eventually decided to leave the area and head back to the village of Rupit. I wanted to show my friend more of Rupit, so we reached a crossroads with the river behind us. The sun came out and my friend agreed to walk through the forest. We entered this rejuvenating forest path. I was very happy because there are other waterfalls here too, ones that don’t appear during dry seasons. During droughts, the riverbed dries up, leaving only small pools of water and waterfalls become nonexistent. Now, though, despite a little mud, we were able to experience a wonderful natural adventure.
Then it started to rain again, just light drizzle at first, but enough to get us wet. At least it wasn’t heavy rain. Despite everything, today’s walk was quite enjoyable. The weather was generally good, except that the sun disappeared and clouds rolled in just around lunchtime. We did feel a bit chilly eating our salads, but not too much.
We were getting closer to town. Rupit was right in front of us. Here there are stairs built from stones; the village is constructed on lava. Staircases are common structures here. We wandered around a bit, then prepared to head home.
Outside the rain intensified. People had umbrellas, but we didn’t. We reached the main square of the town. There’s a souvenir shop here and a restaurant. The souvenir store was open, so you could pick up a small gift. In this village, there are beautiful metal bells, especially ones made of steel. They come in various shapes and designs. We walked through a few more streets and saw insect-themed bells among other variations.
The rain became heavier, so we had to say our goodbyes here. For today, I said farewell to Rupit. But I will definitely return. It's really a place I love deeply. If you're nearby, I encourage you to stop by and enjoy its magnificent natural beauty.
