Z okazji urodzin dostałem od chłopaka córki zestaw piw z browaru Lefebvre. Dwa były niskoalkoholowe (0,4%), ale dużo ciekawsze w smaku okazały się pozostałe dwa z serii d’UNPLUGGED – Dikkenek Belgian IPA. Kiedy mi je wręczał, wytłumaczył, skąd wzięła się nazwa piwa i rysunek na etykiecie.

Co znaczy „Dikkenek”?

Nazwa „Dikkenek” w dialekcie flamandzkim oznacza „gruby kark”, ale w potocznym znaczeniu odnosi się do kogoś zarozumiałego, chełpliwego, tzw. „wielkiej gęby”. Jest to określenie używane z przymrużeniem oka, często w Belgii, do opisania postaci o wielkim ego, ale i charyzmie. Twórcy piwa, czerpiąc z tego kulturowego archetypu, chcieli oddać hołd belgijskiemu duchowi, autoironii i postaciom, które rozsławiły Belgię na świecie, takim jak Jean-Claude Van Damme czy Benoît Poelvoorde. Określenie „Dikkenek” zyskało popularność szczególnie za sprawą kultowej belgijskiej komedii o tym samym tytule, a rysunek na etykiecie przedstawia jej głównego bohatera — Claudy'ego, w którego wcielił się François Damiens.

Historia Brasserie Lefebvre sięga 1876 roku, kiedy to Jules Lefebvre, rolnik i karczmarz, postanowił założyć browar, aby zaspokoić pragnienie pracowników pobliskich kamieniołomów. Jego wizja i ciężka praca położyły podwaliny pod rodzinny biznes, który przetrwał próbę czasu, dwie wojny światowe i zmieniające się gusta konsumentów. Piwo prezentuje się w szkle niezwykle apetycznie. Ma jasnozłotą, lekko zmętnioną barwę, zwieńczoną obfitą, białą i trwałą pianą, która pięknie zdobi ścianki szkła (tzw. lacing). W smaku Dikkenek to prawdziwa eksplozja owocowości, która idealnie balansuje z solidną, ale niezalegającą goryczką. Zawartość alkoholu na poziomie 6,7% jest dobrze ukryta, co czyni to piwo niebezpiecznie pijalnym. Wysokie nasycenie dwutlenkiem węgla potęguje uczucie rześkości.

Jeśli szukasz piwa, które jest jednocześnie złożone, orzeźwiające i pełne belgijskiego „joie de vivre”, Dikkenek z pewnością nie zawiedzie. Na zdrowie, albo jak mawiają Belgowie, „Santé!”.

For my birthday, I received a set of beers from the Lefebvre brewery from my daughter's boyfriend. Two were low-alcohol (0.4%), but the other two from the d'UNPLUGGED series – Dikkenek Belgian IPA – proved to be much more interesting in taste. When he gave them to me, he explained where the beer's name and the drawing on the label came from.

What Does "Dikkenek" Mean?

The name "Dikkenek" in the Flemish dialect means "fat neck," but in colloquial terms, it refers to someone arrogant, boastful, a "big mouth." It is a tongue-in-cheek term, often used in Belgium to describe a character with a big ego but also charisma. The creators of the beer, drawing on this cultural archetype, wanted to pay homage to the Belgian spirit, self-irony, and the personalities who made Belgium famous worldwide, such as Jean-Claude Van Damme and Benoît Poelvoorde. The term "Dikkenek" gained popularity especially thanks to the cult Belgian comedy of the same name, and the drawing on the label depicts its main character — Claudy, played by François Damiens.

The history of Brasserie Lefebvre dates back to 1876, when Jules Lefebvre, a farmer and innkeeper, decided to establish a brewery to quench the thirst of workers from the nearby quarries. His vision and hard work laid the foundations for a family business that has stood the test of time, two world wars, and changing consumer tastes. Nearly 150 years since its founding, the brewery is still managed by the Lefebvre family, continuing their mission of creating exceptional beers that combine history with modernity.

Review

The beer presents itself in the glass in an extremely appetizing way. It has a light golden, slightly hazy color, crowned with an abundant, white, and lasting foam that leaves beautiful lacing on the glass. In terms of taste, Dikkenek is a true explosion of fruitiness that perfectly balances with a solid but non-lingering bitterness. The alcohol content of 6.7% is well-hidden, which makes this beer dangerously drinkable. High carbonation enhances the feeling of crispness.

If you are looking for a beer that is simultaneously complex, refreshing, and full of Belgian "joie de vivre," Dikkenek will certainly not disappoint. Cheers, or as the Belgians say, "Santé!".
