How K-Dramas and BTS Made Me Discover Korea

If I think about it, my first step into Korea wasn’t music, it was actually through K-Dramas. I’ve always loved movies, so when I first came across k-dramas, I decided to give them a try. I didn’t expect much at the beginning, but after watching a few episodes, I was hooked. The stories felt different, the emotions were real, and the characters pulled me in like no other. That was the first time I started noticing Korea

Through k-dramas, I saw a lifestyle that was new to me. The way they greeted each other, their respect for elders, their strong sense of family and friendship, these things stood out. I also noticed their fashion, their food, and the little details of their everyday life. Even though I was just watching a drama, it felt like I was learning about their culture. At that point, Korea became more than just another country on the map for me

But things went even deeper when I later discovered BTS. I had already been exposed to some Korean culture through dramas, but bts opened my eyes wider. I used to see them online a lot, people talking about them everywhere. At first, I didn’t take it seriously. I thought maybe it was just hype. But one day, curiosity made me listen to their song. The moment I did, I understood why people loved them

Their music had energy, their lyrics had meaning, and they delivered it in a way that felt powerful. Even though most of the lyrics were in Korean, I could still feel the emotions in their voices. Later, when I looked up translations, I was surprised at how deep the lyrics were, talking about youth, struggles, dreams, and selflove. That hit me hard because those are things almost everyone goes through

Following bts also gave me a closer look at Korean culture. I noticed how much respect they had for each other, how hardworking they were, and how humble they remained despite their fame. I started learning small Korean words from their songs and interviews without even planning to, things like annyeong (hello), saranghae (I love you), and kamsahamnida (thank you) I hope the spellings are correct because I had to look them up online

They also introduced me more to Korean food. I would see them eating kimchi, ramyeon, or bulgogi in their behind the scenes videos, and I became curious. I had already seen food in k-dramas, but bts made me want to actually taste it. They made food look like more than just eating, it was a whole experience

Looking back now, I can say I discovered Korea in two stages. First was through k-dramas, which gave me the first glimpse of their lifestyle and values. The bts, who deepened my connection and made me appreciate Korea on another level through music, culture, and even language

K-dramas made me curious, but bts made me more intentional about learning. Both of them played a big role in how I see Korea today. One day, I’d love to visit Korea, see the places I have only watched on screen, taste the food properly, and maybe attend a bts concert. Until then, I’m grateful that movies and music gave me this doorway into a culture I might never have discovered on my own
