My First Pocket Money

The first time i received pocket money was when I started secondary school. I gained admission into a prominent Federal college in my state, and it was a boarding school. On my first day of resumption, after my parents dropped me off at the school entrance, they gave me my very first pocket money. I really did not know what it was for, but I remember keeping it safely in my box.

I had enough provisions at the time, so I did not really make use of the money throughout that session. Every last Sunday of each month was visiting day for parents and guardians, and on every visiting day, my parents would give me pocket money again. Each time, I would simply take it and keep it safely in my box.

After the first term examinations, during the holiday, when I got back home, I handed all the pocket money back to my mother. She was very surprised and asked if I never had any need for it. Honestly, I just did not know what to do with it then.

With time, in subsequent sessions, I was the one who began to ask for more money. That was when I had fully settled into the boarding house system. Most of my basic belongings started getting stolen, things like my bucket, cutlery, bathing soap, detergent, and other small items. I had to start buying replacements from the school tuck shop, so I finally understood the real purpose of pocket money.

So I would say I really did not know what to do with my very first pocket money, and that was why I kept it safe. Whenever I think about it now, I just laugh at myself. It feels funny remembering how innocent and clueless I was at the time.
