I probably deserve that - 5 Minutes Free write

When I accidentally stepped on my dog’s paw, he let out a sharp yelp and then quietly retreated to his bed. Later, when he started ignoring me completely, refusing to play catch, turning away when I called his name, and just lying there looking heartbroken, I couldn’t help but think, “I probably deserve that.” It really broke my heart to see him like that.

I wish I could explain to him that it was a complete accident, that I would never hurt him on purpose. But dogs don’t understand apologies in words, and all I can do now is show him love and patience. He's been sulking all day, clearly upset and withdrawn, and it's painful to watch.

Maybe he just needs some time to feel safe and comforted again. Sometimes dogs react in ways that are surprisingly human; sulking, needing space, even nursing their feelings. I know it might take a little while, but I believe he’ll forgive me eventually. Until then, I’ll stay close, gentle, and let him know I’m here when he’s ready to come around again.
