Assumptions people make about me

There’s been this assumption people have had about me since my secondary school days. I honestly thought that when I moved to the university and changed my environment, things would be different, but it actually got worse.

People like to assume I’m rich. They think I always have money and that I can never be broke. Anytime I tell my friends or even close relatives that I’m broke, they act like I’m joking. They never take me seriously because in their minds, I always have money. And since I’m good at saving, they automatically believe I can never run out of cash.

But the truth is, there are days when I really need financial help. There are moments when I’m genuinely struggling. Yet because of this assumption people have about me, nobody believes me. It’s like my own situation doesn’t count. That’s part of why I’ve decided to work hard and stay on my feet financially, so I don’t ever reach the point where I need to borrow. I have this personal principle about borrowing and taking loans. I just don’t like it, and I try as much as I can not to get there.

Even when I dress in something simple or casual, people still assume I’m just being humble and that I have plenty of money somewhere.

At this point, I’ve accepted that people will think whatever they want to think. I can’t force them to change their minds. So instead, I’m focusing on handling my finances well and keeping myself stable, because I already know that if I ever cry out for help, most people won’t take me seriously. I’ve just learned to rely on myself, since others already believe I don’t need anything.

It's a funny assumption. I don't know why people will assume something like that and hold on it. This is sad because like you mentioned, they won't believe when you're really in need. Maybe you should just accept you have money, perhaps they've seen your potential and hopefully the money will be there one day. Haha.

And since they assume you have money, let me follow them and assume too, so that you will help my life na 😄.

I think that when you don't like to bother people with your financial struggles and learn how to manage what you have, people will start to assume you have more than enough money.

I can relate to your story, as someone who doesn't know how to complain but tries to figure things out. Yes, sometimes I wish people would understand that I need money as much as they do. But it's okay; we keep making our own money, lol.

Assumptions can be devastatingly damaging. The need to feel hyper-dependent often stems from this. Just remember, that you don't have to go it alone, and you should always have someone in your corner that you can rely on when storms hit. Asking for help doesn't make you less, in fact it just shows that you are human. Much love to you my friend and thank you for sharing <3

People can act so funny it’s so relatable , they might even go as far as calling you big L or adding rich kid to your name .

The rate at which people come up with answers of their own, when it comes to other people, is baffling. So just because you’re don’t look tattered, you don’t deserve to be taken seriously when you call for help? A very nonsense mentality.
