Still Life Tulips in Vase Oil Pastel

Still Life Sunflower in Vase Oil Pastel.gif

Hello! How are you? I was organizing my craft materials, and then I saw my oil pastels lying around collecting dust, so yeah, I decided to use them today, and it has been a while since I used them, so I have time to browse for reference that I can draw.

Now I remembered that for this year I should buy the one brand that I have been eyeing long time until now, going to add it to my oil pastels collection.

So yeah, to stop myself from overthinking what's happening inside our home because everyone has colds and coughing, and yeah nevermind LOL. So I decided to draw tulips in a vase that I saw on Pinterest. I hope you like it.

Craft Time!

The sketchbook they usually use is kinda small, and I decided to combine the left and right sheets as my canvas.

I start by drawing a shape just to see if my proportions are right, and I use the color that is the main color of the reference.

And then I layer it with more details, just go with the flow, I didn’t focus on a more accurate reference as long as it looks good.

After that, I started doing the outline of the leaves using the darkest shade of green, and then I did the same on the flowers.

I fill in those leaves with a lighter green shade using light pressure, doing that makes that layer of color more blendable.

Next, I added a shade of orange at the bottom part of the flower as I did to the leaves. I layered it with just the lightest pressure.

Now I am going to start adding a heavier layer of shades of color to the flowers. I did it one by one.

This time, I added more contrast and vibrance to the flowers. I just keep repeating the layering of the flowers and leaves until the color builds up.

After that, I start layering the background color more, just so that I can experiment with what color I layer on it next.

To make it more dimensional and not too flat, I added the darkest shades where the shadows are, and I think I made the right decision. Now the drawing is coming to life more.

For this part, I did layer heavy color on each part so that I could fill those white gaps in the drawing. And then I fill the background too.

For the final process, I use this clay tool to add texture and highlight by scratching the drawing. I like to do this because it gives a unique twist to it.
