I Painted My Cat NikNik Using Watercolor Paint
Hello, how are you? Last month was not my month, everything I touched broke, and I had little conflict with family. And I feel like if I go out I won't be home alive LOL. It is really something in me. You know, I felt the worst before nothing new to me.
One thing I do is to isolate myself, wait for the month to end, and maybe isolate myself until the new year, LOL. And you know I have a lot of hobbies that if I get tired of one medium, I jump to another hahaha. So I decided, why not paint something to distract myself from everything?
Watercolor made me want to do art as a hobby to the point that I use that hobby to earn money to support that hobby of mine. Now, because of that, I invested and upgrading more of my materials. What I lack now is the confidence, LOL, good old days.
Materials I Used:
- Watercolor Paint
- Watercolor Brush
- Watercolor Paper 200gsm
- Tissue Paper
- Mechanical Pencil 0.5 HB
- Eraser
- Two Bottles with water
- Spray Bottle
Let's Paint!
Let's Paint!
What I do to draw the line art is to sketch the reference in light pressure, and then after that, I finish it with detail and clean line art. To avoid being muddy, I like to run the line art through a Kneadable eraser to remove excess graphite dust from the paper.
Then I will start painting the portrait by starting with lighter colors of the fur. Lighter colors require more water than paint.
While that part is still drying, I am going to paint the other part of the portrait, because layering the paper while it is still wet is going to ruin the paper, which is not good.
Now that the fur is completely dry, I am going to add more layers of paint, but as layering goes by, the amount of water used is reduced, and the amount of paint is more.
For this part of the process, I am starting to add darker values to the portrait.
In this part, I focus more on adding darker values to the important parts of the portrait, like the eyes, the nose, and the lip. Those parts needed to be darker no matter what, because the painting will look flat and uneven when the values are the same.
Like I said earlier, the more the paint goes, the less water is in the paint itself, so make sure to dry it completely before layering.
In watercolor, knowing where the lighting and highlights are important, once you mess up that part, it will lightly destroy everything, so better to invest in masking fluid to not worry about your highlight or just use a white pen like me, but sometimes doing it naturally is more realistic looking.
For this part of the portrait, what I did was add more saturation and contrast to the painting to make it more lively and not so dull-looking.
And I think the portrait is good to go, so I added a blue background. This part is my favorite.
And then one of my favorites of all time is adding highlights to the portrait using a white pen, but using gouache is better. I like to use a white pen because I have more control over it.
And of course, I will finish it with my signature in red. I like using red paint to messenger because that is my favorite lol.
Did a little photoshoot for cover :D
