COOKING BLOG: Sauteed Long Bitter Gourd with Egg and Tomatoes

$1

Hello, how are you? My grandma used to cook bitter gourd a lot when I was still little, and whenever I saw this food, I thought, 'How can they swallow this bitter-tasting vegetable?' I discovered that eating bitter gourd has numerous benefits for the body, and the way you cook it matters too.

I believe that people's taste buds get less picky when growing up. I was one of those people. And my parents are not picky eaters, so why not be like them too, but I have a few foods I cannot eat at all LOL.

Bitter gourd cooked in egg is always my go-to recipe whenever we have one at home, they are just perfect for each other, and it is a healthier version than cooking egg alone. How do you cook bitter gourd, or is the veggie not for you?

Ingredients I Used:

  • Long Bitter Gourd
  • 5 Tomatoes
  • 4 Eggs
  • 2 Red Onion
  • 4 Garlic
  • tsp. All-in-one Seasoning
  • 1 tbsp. Salt
  • 3 tbsp. Cooking Oil
  • 1 1/2 cup Water
  • 1/4 tsp. Ground Pepper & Chili Flakes
  • tsp. Fish Sauce

Prepping The Ingredients:

First, I cracked the four eggs in a bowl, and I seasoned the eggs with a teaspoon of all-in-one seasoning.

And whisk them until well combined.

Marinating the Bitter Gourd with Salt:

In another bowl, I put the sliced bitter gourd into a bowl and then I added about a tablespoon of salt.

And then I mix the salt until it is well combined with the bitter gourd. And let it sit for about 10 minutes. What this does is remove the extreme bitterness from the veggie.

After 10 minutes, the bitter gourd will let out juice, and what I do is to squeeze the bitter melon until all the juice almost comes out, and then after that, I wash off the excess salt and juice from it. Set it aside for later.

Let's Cook!

In a hot pan, I added about 3 tablespoons of cooking oil.

Then I added the tomatoes in and cooked them until their texture of them turn mushy.

And then I added the bitter gourd and mixed it until well combined.

And then I am going to add the aromatics, and I cook them until the aroma comes out.

Then I added about 1 1/2 cups of water. Let it boil until almost all the water evaporates.

After that, I added 1/4 teaspoon of ground pepper and chili flakes.

And then I added about a teaspoon of fish sauce.

When the texture of the food is kind of getting oily, it is time to add the egg mixture.

I added the egg into the pan, and I let it sit for about 10 seconds.

Then I mix it fast to make sure they're equally cooked. I like it more like toasted, it has more flavor to it.

Now the food is cooked!

Same here nong bata pa ako, I don't eat that coz its too bitter for me. But then, depende talaga sa pagkakaluto eh. We do the same din soaking it in salt muna. Tapos ang gusto ko talaaga dito is maraming egg. I think it helps din ma reduce bitterness nya. I think lang.
