Indoor Garden

avatar

Hey there, would you like to see my small but charming, I like to think it is, indoor garden? Well, get ready because here it comes.

I'll start with the orchids. We have quite a few right now of differing sizes and colors. A few months ago they started to show signs of new flower growth and that's always exciting.

Now heading into spring they are really starting to bloom. I wonder if indoor plants know what season it is? Maybe they can tell by the amount of light that comes through the windows - who knows?

What I like most about orchids is that they stay in bloom for a long period of time and will continue to produce new flowers indefinitely after they go through their natural dormant period. They are really a good bang for your buck sort of flower.

This pink colored orchid is particularly pretty in my opinion. I like its vibrant color and the unique and untricate pattern that it has.

We have quite a few succulents as well. Any type of succulent is great for an indoor garden. Succulents tend to be very hearty and very low maintenance.

20230501_164004~2.jpg

Many varieties can go for long periods of time without needing to be watered and they tend not to be too picky when it comes to sunlight - lots of sun or little and they've always done well for me. Other plants can be the opposite in that regard. A fraction of a little too much or too little sunlight and they may wilt and die or burn up like dead leaves in a hot summer. Succulents are easy peasy in comparison to those types.

We've had this aloe vera plant for years now, probably 5-8 or something like that. It started out as one very small plant and now it is made up of 15 or so medium to large sized ones. We really should separate them all into their own individual pots. Self propagating plants are great if you want to expand your home garden at no additional cost.

20230501_164044~2.jpg

Of the three plants in this next photo I only know the name of one. The tall one on the left hand side is a type of ficus. I have know idea what the other two are though. There are so many different plants out there and new ones are being bred all the time. It's impossible for me to know them all. This ficus is new and quite immature at the moment.

My wife recently set this table up by one of the windows and I think that it looks pretty good there.

20230501_163917~2.jpg

I worry a little that the sun will be to harsh though, especially for the orchid which tend to like indirect sunlight. We keep the middle blinds closed normally though so I'm hoping that it will be alright. It's also over top of a register for the furnace so it may dry out quickly in the direct heat. The more I'm thinking about this the more I'm begining to wonder if it's really a good place at all. Time will tell I suppose.

Well that is it for my little indoor garden. Until next time, thanks for stopping by.

WoW! The display is charming!
Lovely pots, that I can see your cat wanting to sit beside... the good thing is that they might be too heavy for her to kick them out of the way 😆

I like the patterns on the orchids, and I grew an orchid for one year. The plant in the blue pot is really pretty. Similar to croton but more delicate it seems.
Yeah, you'll have to monitor the effect of the sunlight and switch them around if/when necessary (hopefully when/if it's not too late).
I think they'll be alright though:)))

Haha yeah the cat can't really climb on that small table luckily. She is actually pretty good not to push things off surfaces, though many cats like to do that sort of thing.

What happened to your orchid? Did it die or did you have to give it away?

My best friend gave me the orchid to brighten up the boat. The orchid was thriving until we decided to sell the boat and it was dead just about the same time that we handed over the boat to the new owner 🙃

My wife's pretty proud of her plants, too. They're budding and germinating and the other terminology, she tells me where to dig and stuff.

Figured that was more appropriate for your comment section than my weed plants and how the outdoor's doing surprisingly well for North Carolina but'll never compare to the indoor.

Haha you could have mentioned the weed plants lol its legal in Canada now. People can grow up to three plants at home I believe

Our weather is up and down this year. Hot and cold and repeat.
Succulents are great for indoors. Super easy to maintain and they can be pretty cool looking.

It is exactly that hot and cold and hot and cold that has humped a lot of my "hardy" plants. I was quite bereft that my little lollipop tree out front just turned brown and died. Its like a plant conspiracy!

Yeah it's hard on plants. How is the new bamboo doing? I hope that is staying strong 💪

It is doing ok, not really grown much. Spring is normally when they sprout a bit but with the weather is just sort of maintaining a holding pattern. It looks quite healthy though which is smashing!

Hopefully another the or for weeks it might suit our a new cane or two!!

Yeah it takes time for plants to take root. Then they really get going. Glad to hear that it is healthy.

It had better not die, I will go to the underworld and haul it back with righteous fury if it does!

I'm amazed by the beauty of your indoor plants. Such a good stress reliever having them inside the house. They release anxiety and wearies away.

Oh I love your indoor oasis! Those orchids are magnificent. My brother is also a lover and grower of orchids, although I think here in SA our confused weather is triggering the blossoming of more than just orchids. As for your aloe vera - it is by far one of my favourite plants. Simply jammed full of healing power
