Coffee, Overnight Oats, and a Tiny Barista

It's been a minute since I've done a post on coffee so today I'm going to bore you with my morning coffee routine at work, a new breakfast that I've been enjoying with my beverage and a fun little addition to our coffee bar at home. Here we go.

1000009032.jpg

Firstly let's start with my coffee routine in the morning.

I wake up and pet my cat. She always races over to greet me in the morning. From there I head over to our coffee bar and grind enough beans for one serving of coffee. I put them into a filter and hit the button on the machine for a standard drip / brewed coffee. Next I feed the cat and dog, pack my lunch for the day, let the dog outside, and then retrieve my thermos before finishing up to leave for work.

I arrive at work 8-10 minutes early and punch in. I start my computer and pour my coffee into one of three different mugs that I use specifically at work. I never drink coffee from my thermos and always drink from a mug. For some reason I don't like the taste and smell of the coffee when I drink it from a metal lined container.

1000009033.jpg

I like to use a smaller mug and two of ones that I use at work are souveniers from a German Christmas Market that we went to a few years ago. The other mug was a gift from a previous coworker.

I enjoy half of my coffee while I go over my patient list at the hospital and review my consults then the other half when I get back from our interdisciplinary rounds with the team. I eat my breakfast (overnight oats) at that time as well while I plan out my daily tasks, make a to-do list and answers questions that come in through the secure chats. That is basically my coffee routine for the morning at work.

Next is the overnight oats that I've been making. They are a delicious and healthy way to start the day, or at least I like to think that they are healthy.

20250209_175638~2.jpg

I use large flake/rolled oats, almond milk, chia seeds, coconut, a scoop of collagen (I'm on that trend now) and a tsp of spirulina - sometimes referred to as blue green algae.

20250209_175919~2.jpg

The spirulina gives the oats a deep rich blue green color and adds a lot of nutrients to the meal. The one we buy doesn't have a lot of flavor but definitely adds an earthiness to the oats.

I also add blueberries for added flavor (fresh or frozen, depending on what I buy for the week).

The last thing to talk about is our tiny barista. Several years ago I received a Lego barista as a small Christmas gift. Back then we didn't have a fancy coffee maker or bar in our home but my wifes parents had an automatic latte machine, so I decided to place it on their machine in secret and allow them to enjoy the little Lego man.

20241229_092956~2.jpg

After we got our espresso machine I wanted to get the barista back but he remained on their machine for years and is still there today, so it just didn't feel right to take it back after all of this time. Last year my wife found a Lego group online that sells and swaps various pieces of Lego, and someone happened to have a barista man that they were selling.

She bought it and gave it to me as a Christmas gift, so now we have our own little Lego barista sitting on our coffee bar. I think it's a fun little addition and brings a small sense of joy when I see it.

Well thats it for my coffee routine, breakfast and tiny barista post. I hope it didn't bore you too much. Do you have a favorite breakfast or routine that you do in the morning? Let me know in the comments!

I really liked the little barita, little Larry is very nice, I hope he makes some delicious coffees. The oatmeal looks very healthy and I'm sure the body makes good use of every ingredient.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us.☕

Good day.

Yeah, the barista is a fun addition. The Oatmeal is pretty tasty and I look forward to it everyday 😋

I have heard a few things about collagen lately, you recommend? I always like a supplement or two 😀

Did you hear good things or bad?

My wife swears that her hair is thicker and stronger because of it. We buy the collagen peptides so it's made up of amino acids. I think it would be good for muscle recovery from exercising. It's hard to say if I can distinctly notice or feel the benefits though. My knees have gotten a lot better in the past year or so, but I don't know if its from the collagen or just the amount of time for recovery.

I find with all supplements there is a kind of leap of faith aspect in that you never really know if its actually doing anything beneficial or not or even if it's just acting as a placebo.

Moral of this story for me is that I like to think that I'm getting benefits from it haha 😂

That's like all the things I try. Zinc, fish oil and all that jazz. It could be placebo it could be genuine effects!!

I think I will give em a whirl. I have heard good things but in that unsubstantiated anecdotal kind of way!

Yeah. That's the way of all of these types of things, you have to just try them out and hope for the best. The only thing that I really seemed to notice a big difference on was when I started taking Vitamin D and around the same time started eating sardines and anchovies for the fish oils and calcium from the bones. After two weeks of taking the vitamin D I just randomly noticed that my teeth got super white (relatively of course, compared to before taking the vitamin). I think the vitamin D allowed my body to absorb more calcium from the fish bones. That I actually noticed that just looking in the mirror one day. So vitamin D and anchovies - it's like a super food combo for your teeth and bones apparently 😂

Let me know if you notice anything from the collagen if you do start taking it

That sounds awesome. I occasionally take vitamin D. Not anchovies though although I could. In fact perhaps I shall!

I will try to get some shortly and let you know if I sense anything!

Not gonna lie, was really intrigued by the tiny barista in the title of this post...gotta say, did not disappoint xD Your barista looks like he means business. And no, no post can be that boring as long as it contains coffee... and a really interesting smoothie thing - are you seeing any results from the collagen yet? That whole combo sounds and looks pretty tasty!

The "smoothie thing" is overnight oats. You add milk (or a form of it: soy, oat or almond milk...etc) to rolled oats and chia seeds and let it sit overnight and it turns into a cold Oatmeal or pudding. It's quite good and very easy to make. We prepare several of them for the week and I just add the milk the night before.

I was saying this above in another comment as well - My wife swears that her hair is thicker and stronger because of collagen. It's hard to say if I can distinctly notice or feel the benefits but I like to think so.

Do you take collagen?

Aaah so that's how you do overnight oats. I love rolled oats, but frankly get a little lost in all the different oat-types. Gotta try this some time. And no, I do not take collagen, but like others here, I keep hearing good things. Thicker, stronger hair? That's me sold :D

Yeah I agree that all of the different types of oats can be confusing and some places call them different things. In Canada, or at least the brand that I buy, are called "Large Flake" oats and other places call them rolled. They are the flat ones. The main thing is that they are steamed when they roll them so the oats are cooked a little. I think any kind of quick oats would work as well but 1 minute oats or quick cook might get a little too mushy? You just can't use the whole/raw oats that are not steamed in their process. I don't think our bodies can digest completely uncooked grains.

Good luck with the collagen if you try it out!

It seems my notifications have been tripping!
Luckily, Honeydue saw your post because it doesn't show up on my feed, and somehow, the bot didn't pick it up either.
I just woke up and saw your link added for the Grind; otherwise, I wouldn't have known you stopped by... I will have my morning coffee and get back to your post. 😁

I never drink coffee from my thermos

Whoa! Thank goodness for that!

Those 2 of your coffee mugs are unique.

I use large flake/rolled oats, almond milk, chia seeds, coconut, a scoop of collagen (I'm on that trend now) and a tsp of spirulina - sometimes referred to as blue-green algae.

Eh eh! With a list so healthy, you might become immortal!
You're making me feel guilty eating my delicious gammon and eggs for brekkie. 😆

That's a cute story behind your lego barista. Was the other barista also Larry?

Overall, I'm impressed to see that despite having a busy work-life and morning schedule, you still take it slow and easy with petting your cat and dog and doing things at a relaxing pace.

Happy Sunday! :)))

Yeah the mugs are a fun souvenir from our travels.

Immortal - 😂

The other Lego man might be slightly different. I can't recall off the top of my head and can't invision exactly what it looks like. I do recall that it had a small base that it stood on.

Always have to pet the animals in the morning 😃
