FUNGI FRIDAY : A SURPRISE AT THE OLD TREE BASE

This autumn I stopped again at one of my favorite parking spots in Torgau, near a small lake. And right at the entrance — there it was. Big, bright orange, beautifully layered! Who am I talking about? LAETIPORUS SULPHUREUS of course!
It was my first time seeing this mushroom in the wild and to my surprise, it was growing low on a tree stump — perfect for photos! Usually these fungi prefer high places, which makes it hard to get a proper close-up unless you're into tree climbing (I'm not 😅). So I was genuinely excited, I’ve always wanted to see one up close.
Now, a fun fact for you: LAETIPORUS SULPHUREUS is also known as CHICKEN OF THE WOODS. Yes, this strange, wavy, orange thing is edible and many people say it's delicious! When fried or cooked in breadcrumbs, it supposedly tastes just like chicken. I used to think that was craz. How can anyone eat that and actually enjoy it?
Well, I’ll admit I was tempted. But I didn't go for it this time. The shape still weirds me out a bit... and more importantly, it was growing right at the entrance to the parking lot — a popular place for dogs (and not just dogs😉) to leave their mark. So I decided to skip the culinary experiment and just admire it with my camera instead.
But who knows — maybe next season I’ll find one in a cleaner spot and give it a try. And if I do, I promise to tell you whether it really tastes like chicken!
Would you dare to fry it up? Or maybe you’ve already tried it and can confirm the flavor? Let me know! 😉

Great photos! I don’t blame you for not eating them. I'm a vegetarian and even though it's not chicken, it might taste too much like chicken. Great colour, though.
I totally get your point – if something tastes too much like chicken, even when it’s not... that’s suspicious! 😅
Indeed! 😁
WOW!... Amazing fungi species to see!... Impressive shots!

Hit the jackpot and it looks like perfect condition for harvesting.
Haha, I thought so too! 🍄 But I left it where it grew – maybe next time I’ll be brave enough to try it on the pan 😉
They are the best one to harvest. Super easy to identify and they taste just like chicken.
