Many of us didn’t suffer the consequences of the first two world wars, but it’s likely that the parents or grandparents of some had to survive those turbulent times.

I understand that the First World War was sold as “The War to End All Wars.” Be that as it may, we cannot even pretend to believe that an event of the magnitude and consequences of a world war could bring anything positive—at least not for ordinary people.

We know all too well that every war in history has benefited only a handful of families, who once pulled—and still pull—the strings of international politics.

Therefore, it is utterly inconceivable that decent people would willingly want to take part in any war. Yet without the involvement of ordinary people, the wars of the past would never have even begun.

The masses have always been manipulated by appealing to humanity’s most primal fears and by painting the enemy as an inferior human being—one in need of conquest, evangelization, or cultural refinement. Imposing our traditions on them is framed as some magnanimous gift.

But the truth is that no war has ever been started on altruistic or humanitarian grounds. And right at this moment, we are witnessing—and enabling—a modern genocide live and in real time, and we are not horrified.

That can only mean we’ve learned nothing from history, and we remain like sheep, shepherded by leaders who are far from noble, influencing the masses’ opinions and even their emotions.

The world must learn from history and must take a stand in the present. If the First and Second World Wars taught us nothing, the same applies to genocides happening all over the world.

In the past, they at least had the excuse of not finding out in time, of only learning about events long after they had occurred. Today, what is our excuse?

We may differ in customs or religious beliefs, but that never justifies stripping any person of their inherent human dignity—regardless of race, language, religion, or sexual orientation.

Current events show us not only that we’ve learned nothing from history, but also that we have little interest in learning anything that might prevent these tragic events from repeating.

Let’s not allow hidden—and sometimes not so hidden—interests to hijack our agendas and steer us into a series of events that benefit a few at the expense of the rest of humanity—the same people who, in the end, are the ones left to pick up the broken pieces, as goes that popular yet painfully realistic saying we’ve all heard.

And as a final thought, let us never expect the media to give us the “truth.” We must be skeptical like auditors, inquisitive like detectives, impartial like judges, and compassionate like the faithful.

Muchos no sufrimos las consecuencias de las dos primeras guerras mundiales, pero es posible que los padres o abuelos de algunos, hayan tenido que sobrevivir esos turbulentos tiempos.

Tengo entendido que la Primera Guerra Mundial se vendió como "La Guerra que acabaría con todas las Guerras", sea como sea, no podemos pretender siquiera creer que un evento de la magnitud y las consecuencias de una Guerra Mundial pueda traer algo positivo. Al menos a las personas comunes.

Sabemos de sobra que cada guerra que hubo en la historia, solo benefició a un puñado de familias, que dirigían y aún dirigen los hilos de la política internacional.

Por lo tanto, es totalmente inconcebible que las personas de bien puedan querer participar voluntariamente de alguna guerra, pero es que sin la participación de las personas comunes, las guerras del pasado no hubieran siquiera empezado.

Las masas siempre han sido manipuladas, apelando a los miedos más primarios de la humanidad, y tratando de pintar al enemigo como un humano inferior en muchas ocasiones, que necesita ser conquistado y evangelizado o culturizado, al cual imponer nuestras costumbres y tradiciones es un obsequio magnánimo.

Pero la realidad es que nunca ninguna guerra ha sido iniciada por principios altruistas o humanistas. Y en este mismo minuto, estamos siendo partícipes y complices de un genocidio moderno, en vivo y en directo, y no nos estamos horrorizando.

Eso solo puede significar que no hemos aprendido nada de la historia, y que seguimos siendo ovejas guiadas por unos pastores para nada buenos, que influencian las opiniones y hasta los sentimientos de las masas.

El mundo necesita aprender de la historia, y necesita tomar partido en el momento. Si con la primera y segunda guerra mundial no hemos aprendido nada, lo mismo se aplica a genocidios a lo largo y a lo ancho del mundo.

Antes, por lo menos tenían la excusa de no enterarse a tiempo, de solo conocerse los hechos mucho después de que hayan ocurrido. Ahora, cuál es nuestra excusa?

Podemos diferir de las costumbres y religiones de otras culturas, pero eso no justifica que se les arrebate la dignidad humana inherente al individuo sin importar su raza, idioma, religión u orientación sexual.

Con los acontecimientos actuales, queda demostrado que no solo no hemos aprendido nada de la historia, si no que no tenemos el mínimo interés en aprender de ella para evitar que eventos tan nefastos se repitan.

No dejemos que los intereses ocultos y a veces ni tan ocultos se instalen en nuestras agendas y nos dirijan hacia el curso de los acontecimientos que beneficia a unos pocos en perjuicio del resto de la humanidad, que es la que finalmente paga por los platos rotos, como dice esa frase tan popular pero tan realista que todos hemos escuchado alguna vez.

Y como reflexión final, nunca esperemos que los medios de comunicación nos cuenten la "verdad", tenemos que ser escépticos como los auditores, inquisitivos como los detectives, imparciales como los jueces, y compasivos como los religiosos.
