Space Colonization [EN/ES]

Life on Earth can be wonderful, but it can also be hell—passing through countless shades that make terrestrial experiences incredibly diverse.

As a species, we’ve proven to be a calamity for this planet, causing the extinction of many other species over time, and exploiting and polluting the Earth relentlessly and hastily.

However, if another habitable planet were discovered—one we could reach without spending many years traveling through outer space—I would have no doubt about volunteering to colonize that new world, leaving behind all my earthly and spiritual attachments and deficiencies.

The challenge of populating a new world where a new humanity could begin, free from the flaws of the one that inhabits Earth, would be a utopian adventure and a unique opportunity for learning and growth.

It would be a kind of rebirth—a second chance to build a meaningful life that is truly worth living.

I’m not saying I deserve the opportunity to colonize a new planet, or that I possess the attitudes or qualities needed to form a new and better society, but being surrounded by people with ideals could be a good opportunity to rebuild myself as a human being.

Many times I believe that the vast social, economic, religious, and cultural differences we have on this Earth are too great and cause too many conflicts, too much pain, and too much suffering—things we’ve seen since the beginning of history, and even now we remain passive witnesses to atrocities that should never happen, let alone be repeated.

It’s often said that knowing history helps us avoid repeating the same mistakes, yet we are witnesses to history repeating itself.

Having a new opportunity to populate another planet—with our current experience, technology, and knowledge, but avoiding the mistakes we’ve made as humanity in the past—might be the chance to prevent our extinction as a species.

Planet Earth is suffering the consequences of centuries of abuse and irrational exploitation of its natural resources, and it’s not far-fetched to think that if we continue down this path, we could end up destroying it to the point of making it uninhabitable.

On the new extraterrestrial planet, life should be more focused on cultivating the values that make us human, and on valuing and appreciating differences instead of using them as excuses to divide and hate. On cherishing lived moments and experiences instead of fighting to accumulate wealth and material objects that often fail to bring true happiness.

Like every utopia, imagining a different humanity that learns from the mistakes of the past is a dream—but if we’re not willing to dream and bet on a better future, we’ve already lost the humanity we should strive to keep intact, and maybe it would be better to stay on this Earth.

The big question is: do we deserve another planet, and would we be capable of respecting it and treating it the way we should have treated this world we live in now?

La vida en la tierra puede ser maravillosa como también puede ser un infierno, pasando por un sinfín de matices diferentes que hacen que las experiencias terrestres sean bastante diversas.

Como especie hemos demostrado ser una calamidad para este planeta, causando la extinción de muchas otras especies a lo largo del tiempo, y explotando y contaminando la tierra sin pausa y con prisa.

Sin embargo, si se descubriera otro planeta habitable al que pudieramos llegar sin perder muchos años viajando por el espacio exterior, no tendría ninguna duda en ser voluntaria para colonizar ese nuevo planeta y dejar atrás todos mis apegos y carencias terrenales y espirituales.

El desafío de poblar un nuevo mundo en el que se pudiera iniciar una nueva humanidad sin todos los defectos de la que habita en la tierra sería una aventura utópica que además sería una oportunidad de aprendizaje y crecimiento único en la vida.

Sería una especie de renacimiento y una segunda chance de construir una vida significativa que merezca la pena ser vida.

No digo que merezca la oportunidad de colonizar un nuevo planeta, o que tenga las actitudes o cualidades necesarias para formar una nueva y mejor sociedad, pero estar rodeada de personas con ideales podría ser una buena oportunidad de reconstruirme como ser humano.

Muchas veces creo que las grandes diferencias sociales, económicas, religiosas y culturales que tenemos en esta tierra son demasiado grandes y causan demasiados conflictos, demasiado dolor y demasiado sufrimiento, los cuales vemos desde el inicio de la historia e incluso ahora somos testigos inmutables de atrocidades que nunca deberían ocurrir y tampoco repetirse.

Siempre se ha dicho que conocer la historia nos evitará repetir los mismos errores, sin embargo, somos testigos de que la historia se repite.

Tener una nueva oportunidad de poblar otro planeta, con la experiencia, tecnología y conocimientos actuales, pero evitando cometer los errores que hemos cometido como humanidad en el pasado tal vez podría ser la posibilidad de evitar nuestra extinción como especie.

El planeta Tierra está sufriendo las consecuencias de centurias de abuso y explotación irracional de sus recursos naturales, y no es descabellado pensar que si se continúa en esa dirección, podríamos acabar destruyéndolo al punto de volverlo inhabitable.

En el nuevo planeta extraterrestre la vida debería estar más enfocada a cultivar los valores que nos hacen humanos y valorar y apreciar las diferencias en lugar de usarlas como excusa para dividir y odiar. En apreciar los momentos vividos y las experiencias en lugar de luchar para acumular riquezas y objetos materiales que muchas veces no traen la felicidad verdadera.

Como toda Utopía, el pensar en una humanidad diferente y que aprenda de los errores del pasado es un sueño, pero si no estamos dispuestos a soñar y a apostar por un futuro mejor, ya hemos perdido esa humanidad que debemos tratar de mantener intacta y tal vez sería mejor quedarnos en esta tierra.

La gran pregunta es, merecemos otro planeta y seremos capaces de respetarlo y tratarlo como deberíamos haber tratado a este mundo en el que estamos ahora?
