Competition or Exhibitionism? [EN/ES]

We all agree that sports are a very important part of people’s lives and that their practice should be encouraged from childhood.

Sports are good for developing both the body and the mind. They foster discipline and increase perseverance. They also help reduce stress and improve frustration tolerance.

Undoubtedly, practicing sports is an activity that should be promoted through public policies. However, what I do not agree with is the expenditure incurred in international events such as the Olympics or World Championships.

It’s not that I believe competition is bad—what’s wrong is dedicating so much time, effort, and resources to selecting the best in the world while there is so much deprivation and misery everywhere.

It is truly unacceptable that while there are still people on the planet without access to clean water, electricity, or even food—and millions are victims of slavery and human trafficking—sporting events are held that require enormous financial investments and the deployment of security forces, among other resources.

This kind of sports competition only impacts the egos of the winners and the nations they represent—nothing more.

Moreover, we must consider that the best athletes rarely win, given that economic disparities between nations make the competition far from fair.

And that’s without even considering the mass defections of athletes from certain countries that offer deplorable living conditions to their citizens, yet still send delegations to these competitions.

At the last Junior Pan American Games held in Asunción, we saw the case of Cuban athletes who chose to abandon their team, families, and country—for reasons we can only imagine.

This is an extreme case, but it clearly shows that the money spent on participating in such events would be better used to improve the economy and living conditions of the country. After all, gold or silver medals won’t change a nation’s reality.

Countries like mine, which rarely win medals because investment in sports is even lower than what is allocated to education or infrastructure, spend billions on advertising and lobbying to host international events—when in reality, we don’t even have decent highways or storm drainage systems to prevent the recurring floods every time it rains.

There are even recurring corruption scandals, including among athletes—some of whom received generous sports scholarships but had stopped training, or were sent to represent the country at the Olympics without even meeting the minimum qualifying standards, simply because they were attractive.

I still support the practice of sports and striving to be the best version of oneself—but not competitions that are neither fair nor beneficial.

¿Competencia o Exhibicionismo?

Todos estamos de acuerdo en que los deportes son una parte muy importante en la vida de las personas, y que hay que fomentar su práctica desde la niñez.

Los deportes son buenos para desarrollar el cuerpo y también la mente. Fomentan la disciplina y aumentan la perseverancia. También son buenos para disminuir el estrés y aumentar la tolerancia a la frustración.

Practicar deportes sin dudas es una actividad que debe ser fomentada por políticas públicas, pero en lo que no estoy de acuerdo es en el gasto incurrido en eventos internacionales tales como Olimpiadas o Campeonatos del Mundo.

No es que crea que la competencia sea mala, lo malo es dedicar tanto tiempo, esfuerzo y recursos para elegir a los mejores del mundo mientras existan tantas carencias y miserias en todas partes del mundo.

Es realmente inadmisible que mientras sigan habiendo en el planeta personas sin acceso al agua potable, electricidad y hasta alimentos, y millones víctimas de esclavitud y trata de personas la celebración de eventos deportivos en los que se invierten cuantiosos recursos económicos y se destinan fuerzas de seguridad entre otros recursos.

Este tipo de competición deportiva solo tiene un impacto en el ego de ganadores y las naciones a las que representan, pero nada más.

Además hay que considerar que pocas veces ganan realmente los mejores atletas, teniendo en cuenta que las diferencias de recursos económicos entre naciones hace que la competencia no sea verdaderamente justa.

Eso sin tener en consideración las deserciones masivas de atletas de ciertos países que ofrecen condiciones deplorables de vida a sus ciudadanos, pero aún así envían delegaciones a estas competencias.

En los últimos juegos panamericanos juniors celebrados en Asunción, tuvimos el caso de atletas cubanos que decidieron abandonar su equipo, familias y país, por razones que solo podemos imaginar.

Este es un caso extremo, pero bien nos habla de que lo que se gasta en participar en este tipo de eventos tendría un mejor uso si se utilizara para mejorar la economía y condiciones de vida del país, después de todo unas medallas de oro o plata no cambiarán la realidad de un país.

Países como el mío, que pocas veces obtiene medallas ya que la inversión en deporte es aún inferior a la que se destina a educación o infraestructura, gasta miles de millones en publicidad y lobbies para poder ser sede de eventos internacionales, cuando en realidad no tenemos ni siquiera tenemos autopistas decentes, o sistemas de desagües pluviales para evitar los recurrentes raudales cada vez que llueve.

Incluso, siempre resultan ciertos escándalos de corrupción inclusive a nivel de atletas, como algunos que cobraban becas deportivas bastante generosas pero habían dejado de entrenar, o de tener atletas en representación en una Olimpiada sin siquiera haber alcanzado una marca mínima para participar por el solo hecho de ser bonitas.

Sigo estando a favor de la práctica de deportes, y de tratar de ser la mejor versión de uno mismo, pero no de unas competencias que ni son justas ni son beneficiosas.
