Are we immortal in spirit? / ¿Somos inmortales en espíritu?

Reincarnation is either a reality or a myth, depending on the culture in which you were born. In Hinduism and Buddhism, reincarnation is a process that is part of the path to enlightenment. It is believed that a soul is destined to reincarnate over and over again until it reaches the end of the cycle of reincarnations, having attained the necessary merits to purify its sins and reach Nirvana.

For other religions, especially atheists and agnostics, reincarnation is considered a myth because it is not part of their religious beliefs or lacks scientific evidence in the case of the latter.

For a long time, Western individuals who claimed to remember their past life, or past lives, were considered delusional. However, some renowned scholars in the fields of psychology and psychiatry later began paying attention to the matter.

Doctors Brian Weiss¹ and Ian Stevenson² are among the most prominent figures in the school of thought that believes in past lives and, therefore, in reincarnation. Nevertheless, it is a phenomenon that cannot be scientifically explained, and modern science does not accept concepts that cannot be demonstrated and replicated.

Although both spent a large part of their careers investigating cases of supposedly reincarnated individuals who remembered past lives and documented them, the academic community met their studies with skepticism. Despite this, they gained popularity among the general public and became authors of several books related to past lives, reincarnation, and regression.

From my Catholic education, the beliefs imparted to us teach that the human soul is unique and that once the time of our death arrives, it must face the Final Judgment. Depending on its outcome, the soul has three possible destinations: Heaven, Hell, or Purgatory.

However, these options do not seem worthy of an Almighty God who is "All Love." While I do believe that actions have consequences and that we must pay for them, I also believe that punishment should be proportional. The idea of eternally burning in the fires of Hell seems excessively cruel to me.

On the other hand, forgiving even the worst criminal simply because they repented in the last second of their life seems unjust. A person who lived a benevolent life but, as a human, also had their sins or errors and dies in their sleep would not have the opportunity to repent—an opportunity that usually arises in the moment one realizes they are about to die.

That is why I find the idea of Karma³ more appealing. However, I am not entirely sure whether Hinduism’s concept—that it is possible to reincarnate as animals, then as humans, and then once again as animals—is correct or not. Who would know the Creator’s will, assuming we believe in one? But the idea that we are born and reincarnate with the opportunity to learn and evolve, and that through our efforts and voluntary decisions we can reach enlightenment and deserve the Lost Paradise, seems much fairer to me than that of Christianity.

La Reencarnación es una realidad o un mito, según la cultura en la que hayas nacido. En el Hinduísmo y Budismo, la Reencarnación es un proceso parte del camino a la Iluminación, y se cree que un alma está destinada a reencarnarse una y otra vez hasta que llegue al final del círculo del ciclo de reencarnaciones, cuando haya alcanzado los méritos necesarios para purificar sus pecados y alcanzar el Nirvana.

Para otras religiones, y en especial para las personas ateas y agnósticas la Reencarnación es un mito, porque no forma parte de las creencias de la religión o no hay evidencia científica en el caso de los últimos.

Mucho tiempo se consideró locas a las personas occidentales que decían recordar su vida anterior, o sus vidas anteriores, pero luego algunos prestigiosos estudiosos del ámbito de la psicología y la psiquiatría empezaron a prestar atención al asunto.

Los Doctores Brian Weiss¹ e Ian Stevenson² son unos de los mayores exponentes de la corriente que cree en las vidas pasadas y por lo tanto en la Reencarnación. Sin embargo, es un fenómeno que no puede ser explicado científicamente y la ciencia moderna no cree en lo que no puede ser demostrado y replicado.

Aunque ambos investigaron durante gran parte de sus carreras casos de supuestas personas reencarnadas que recordaban vidas pasadas, y documentaron los mismos, la comunidad académica recibió con escepticismo sus ideas y estudios, pero aún así ganaron popularidad entre el público general, siendo autores de varios libros relacionados al tema de vidas pasadas, reencarnaciones y regresiones.

Desde mi educación católica, las creencias que nos imparten es que el alma humana es única y que una vez que llegue la hora de nuestra muerte, ella debe enfrentarse a un Juicio Final, y de acuerdo al resultado del mismo, tiene tres posibles destinos: el Cielo, el Infierno o el Purgatorio.

Pero esas opciones me parecen que no son dignas de un Dios Todopoderoso que es "Todo Amor", porque si bien creo en que los actos tienen consecuencias, y debemos pagar por ellas, también creo que el castigo debe ser proporcional. Eso de arder eternamente en el fuego del infierno, me parece muy sádico.

Y por otro lado, perdonar hasta al peor criminal por haberse arrepentido en el último segundo de su vida, me parece injusto, porque una persona que tuvo una vida benevolente pero como humano también tuvo sus pecados o errores, y muere mientras duerme, no tendría esa oportunidad de arrepentirse, que suele aparecer en el minuto que se sabe que se va a morir.

Por eso me gusta más la idea del Karma³, aunque no estoy del todo segura de si la idea del Hinduísmo de que es posible reencarnar en animales y luego en seres humanos y luego nuevamente en animales es la correcta o no, quién sabría los designios del Creador, si es que creemos en uno. Pero la idea de que nacemos y reencarnamos con la oportunidad de aprender y evolucionar, y en base a nuestros esfuerzos y decisiones voluntarias, llegar a la Iluminación, y merecer el Paraíso Perdido me parece mucho más justa que la del cristianismo.
