On Tuesday I missed the traditional gnocchi of the 29th—our monthly ritual—because I had to enroll at the university. Yes, in the 21st century, we still have to present physical documents for these things, and I had to personally pick up a Resolution, which meant a trip of nearly 300 kilometers!

Months ago, I lamented that to apply for admission to one of the faculties at the National University of Asunción, from which I graduated, they were asking even for my birth certificate! It's no exaggeration—they asked for that and a heap of other documents I wouldn't have if I hadn’t been born 45 years ago and officially registered by my parents, right?

Anyway, I left my town on Tuesday morning, hoping to return the next day. But let me remind you—I live in Paraguay, and here things rarely go as they should.

The truth is that on Wednesday, the bus that goes to my town didn’t run. By the way, it’s the only direct option. Today I was told it won’t run tomorrow either.

My last alternative—apart from walking back—is to take a bus and get off at a junction where I have to pray I’ll arrive in time to catch the bus that passes through my city on its way to Encarnación. It’s a risky choice, because if I miss the connection, I’ll be completely left to fate.

As if that weren’t bad enough, I also had trouble with the banking app, which had a vicious bug that prevented me from making any transactions. Fortunately, this happened while I was in Asunción—otherwise, that money would’ve been “frozen” for who knows how long.

There are still some minutes before the bus leaves, and I've already shed a few tears over the story of an elderly man who lost his wallet and didn’t have enough for the return fare.

Thankfully, there are angels on Earth. When the poor man tried to sell an electric kettle he’d bought—taking advantage of the lower city prices—the woman he offered it to went straight to a sales stall to convert it into the cash he needed for the bus ticket.

This story with a happy ending renews my faith in humanity. But it also reaffirms that things are broken in my country—because, at his age, the man shouldn’t even have to pay for a ticket. There’s a law granting half-price fares to seniors, but like so many laws here, it’s just empty ink on paper, passed only to pretend we’re a civilized nation.

El martes me perdí el tradicional ñoquis de los 29 de cada mes para ir a matricularme en la Facultad, ya que en pleno siglo XXI aún se deben presentar papeles para algo así, porque debía retirar personalmente una Resolución, lo que me obliga a realizar un viaje de casi 300 kilómetros!

Meses atrás me había lamentado de que para solicitar mi admisión a una de las Facultades de la Universidad Nacional de Asunción de la cual soy egresada, me pedían hasta la partida de nacimiento! No es exageración, pedían eso y un montón de otros papeles que no podría tener si no hubiera nacido hace 45 años y mis padres no me hubieran registrado, verdad?

Bueno, el tema es que salí del pueblo el martes a la mañana, con la esperanza de volver al día siguiente. Pero déjenme recordarles que vivo en Paraguay, y aquí las cosas nunca son como deberían.

Lo cierto es que el miércoles no salió el bus que va al pueblo donde vivo. Dicho sea de paso, es la única opción directa. Hoy me informaron que mañana tampoco no saldrá el bus.

La última alternativa que tengo, aparte de volver caminando, es tomar un bus y bajarme en una bifurcación en la cual debo rezar para conseguir llegar a tiempo para abordar el bus que pasa por mi ciudad en su ruta hacia Encarnación. Es una alternativa arriesgada, porque si llego a perder la conexión, quedaré literalmente librada a la suerte.

Pues bien, si esto no es lo suficientemente malo, también tuve un problema con la aplicación del Banco, que tenía un feroz bug que no me dejaba realizar ninguna transacción. Dentro de todo, fue una suerte que pasara mientras estaba en Asunción, porque caso contrario, ese dinero se hubiera quedado "congelado" quién sabe hasta cuando.

Aún faltan algunos minutos para la salida del bus, y ya me tocó además derramar algunas lágrimas por la historia de un ancianito que perdió la billetera y no tenía para el pasaje de regreso.

Afortunadamente hay ángeles en la tierra, y cuando el pobre señor intentó vender una hervidora eléctrica que se había comprado aprovechando que en la ciudad son más baratas, la mujer a quien se la ofreció, de inmediato fue a un puesto de ventas para que le efectivizaran el dinero que necesitaba el ancianito.

Esta historia con final feliz me hace renovar mi fe en la humanidad, pero reafirmar que en mi país las cosas funcionan mal, porque por su edad, el señor ni siquiera debería pagar un pasaje, ya que existe una ley de medio pasaje para los adultos mayores que es letra muerta, como muchas otras leyes, que sólo se promulgan para aparentar ser un país civilizado.
