BACKGROUND ON PRION PROTEINS (PrP)

  • PrP is a nrmal protein fnd on the surface of cells.

  • Dring prductn in endoplasmic reticulum ( ER), sme PrP molecules misfold

  • Normaly, misfolded PrP is snt bck into the cell's systolic and dstryed by proteasomes ( protein disposal machine)

  • If too many misfolded PrP molecules build up and can't be degraded , they can trigger cell death.

  • The toxic effect seems to come from their presence in the cytosol, not necessarily from large aggregates.
