The Blue Rabbit - Fiction Story by Krisz Rokk

The fog lifted when Yandu turned around the corner and bumped into a giant blue rabbit.

“What on Earth is this?” yelled Yandu, punching the brake and bringing the car to a stop abruptly.

The rabbit stared at him with his shimmering, crystal white eyes as if waiting for the driver to calm his nervous system down.

At least a quarter of a minute passed until Yandu came to his senses and blocked the doors of the vehicle, desperately looking for a way to escape from the weird encounter. He shifted the car into reverse and pressed the pedal all the way. The loud sound, which mimicked maximum engine acceleration, suddenly disappeared, and the car fell silent. Desperately, Yandu clicked on different buttons to restart the vehicle, but nothing worked.

He looked up and noticed that the blue rabbit’s position hadn’t changed from his initial spot. A few drops of sweat poured down his glasses as he realized that he was stuck with this creature in the middle of the countryside, with nowhere to run and no car to drive by.

He pulled out his phone to call the emergency line, but his phone went dead the moment he pressed the first number.

Overwhelmed by fear and despair, Yandu opened the door, attempting to run into the forest, but the moment he put both his legs on the driveway, he couldn’t move.

A two-foot-tall blue rabbit was standing next to him, whispering:

“Escape if you can. Let’s negotiate.”

“Why did you bring another one of them here?”

“Wait. This specimen is funny. He wears goggles.”

“Goggles?”

“Why do humans need goggles?”

“Because they’re lazy.”

Yandu listened to the conversation, unable to speak or respond.

“What’s your name, human?”

Yandu continued to stare at what looked like a gathering of blue rabbits of different shapes and sizes. He gently opened his lips, and without much thought, the following came out of his mouth:

“Rabbit.”

“Your name is Rabbit?”

The group burst out laughing.

"This human is funnier than all of them we captured combined."

Yandu stared at the group, his lips parted again, and he said:

“Negotiate.”

“We are down to your car, watch, and shoes. What makes you think you can win?”

Yandu put his glasses on the table and inspected the rabbit’s leg. He recalled a story his grandmother told him as a young boy about a rabbit family she encountered while gathering wood in the forest for winter. One of the baby rabbits had an unusual blue color and was unable to jump due to a broken leg. Grandma walked back home, fetched a box and a few blankets, and put the baby rabbit inside to keep him warm. She took a small piece of wood, stabilized the rabbit's foot, and left him inside the box. The next day, she went back to look after the rabbit but found the box empty.

“You are the baby rabbit my grandmother helped in the woods.”

The chatter stopped.

The rabbit that introduced Yandu to the group picked up the glasses from the table and handed them to the visitor.

“This gathering has concluded.”

💎💎💎

Yandu started the car’s engine before peaking at his watch.

3:15 PM.

It coincided with the same time he hit the brakes.

But something was different.

The traffic light changed from red to green, and Yandu found himself in the middle of a crowded city heading home from work.
