Visitando la Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes/Visiting the National Academy of Fine Arts (Esp-Eng)
Muy cerca de la universidad donde estudio, hay una institución que es orgullo de Cuba: la "Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro", la más antigua del país. Durante años estuve pasando frente a este sitio y siempre atrajo mi atención, sobre todo porque tenía un alfiler inmenso de metal que simulaba estar clavado en las paredes del edificio. A mis hijos siempre les decía: "Ese edificio debe tener un dolor tremendo...". Aquello fue motivo de risa por años. Siempre supe que un día tendría la oportunidad de ir hasta allí, así que la semana pasada, cuando salí de la escuela, no pude resistir más y fui.
Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you.
Very close to the university where I study, there is an institution that is a pride of Cuba: the "San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts," the oldest in the country. For years, I kept passing by this place and it always caught my attention, mainly because it had a huge metal pin that looked like it was nailed into the building's walls. I always used to tell my children, "That building must be in tremendous pain...". That was a reason for laughter for years. I always knew that one day I would have the opportunity to go inside, so last week, when I left school, I couldn't resist any longer and went.
Al llegar, vi que ahora tiene, en las columnas del gran portal, una araña gigante con su tela que parece una "viuda negra" (digo yo, que de arañas sé muy poco). Cuando entré, me recibió la recepcionista, una señora llamada Rita, quien con mucho cariño me explicó algunas cosas acerca del lugar y me hizo un poco de historia.
Upon arriving, I saw that it now has, on the columns of the large entrance portico, a giant spider with its web that looks like a "black widow" (or so I say, knowing very little about spiders). When I entered, I was greeted by the receptionist, a lady named Rita, who very kindly explained some things about the place to me and gave me a bit of its history.
Al traspasar su portal, los ruidos de la ciudad y de los autos se desvanecieron y sentí la solemnidad creativa que ha habitado estas paredes durante siglos. Desde su vestíbulo uno comienza a admirar el arte de este santuario, donde el aire parece estar impregnado de óleo y tradición. En la Galería de Arte que se encuentra a la derecha del vestíbulo, había una exposición del artista plástico Arturo Montoto, que les mostraré en otro momento. Por sus pasillos, los jóvenes estudiantes conversan con alegría.
Upon stepping through its portal, the noises of the city and the cars faded away, and I felt the creative solemnity that has inhabited these walls for centuries. From its lobby, one begins to admire the art of this sanctuary, where the air seems impregnated with oil paint and tradition. In the Art Gallery located to the right of the lobby, there was an exhibition by the visual artist Arturo Montoto, which I will show you another time. In its hallways, young students chat happily.
En su patio interior hay unas estrellas en el piso con los nombres de varios pintores cubanos que están en un salón de la fama de Estados Unidos. Recorrer sus aulas y corredores es como hacer un viaje en el tiempo,ver los caballetes de madera que han sido testigos del nacimiento de innumerables talentos. En las paredes cuelgan obras de alumnos y maestros que narran, en distintos estilos, la evolución del arte en Cuba. Por sus aulas han pasado escultores, pintores y grabadores como Rita Longa, Agustín Cárdenas, Juan José Sicre, Victor Manuel, Amelia Peláez, Wifredo Lam (el pintor cubano de mayor proyección internacional), Fidelio Ponce de León, Servando Cabrera Moreno, Roberto Fabelo y Flora Fong, entre otros.
In its interior courtyard, there are stars on the floor with the names of various Cuban painters who are in a hall of fame in the United States. Walking through its classrooms and corridors is like taking a journey back in time,seeing the wooden easels that have witnessed the birth of countless talents. On the walls hang works by students and teachers that narrate, in different styles, the evolution of art in Cuba. Sculptors, painters, and engravers such as Rita Longa, Agustín Cárdenas, Juan José Sicre, Victor Manuel, Amelia Peláez, Wifredo Lam (the Cuban painter with the greatest international recognition), Fidelio Ponce de León, Servando Cabrera Moreno, Roberto Fabelo, and Flora Fong, among others, have passed through its classrooms.
Hoy, la Academia San Alejandro, ubicada en Avenida 31 esq. a 100, Marianao, La Habana, es un centro de referencia nacional y cuenta con una gran variedad de especialidades que incluyen: Pintura; Escultura; Dibujo; Grabado; Cerámica; Gráfica; Ilustración; Orfebrería y Fotografía y Arte Digital. Más allá de la técnica, lo que se respira en San Alejandro es arte. Imagino generaciones de jóvenes pintores, con sus sueños, dedicando horas a capturar una idea o la expresión de un rostro. San Alejandro es un taller vivo donde el pasado se fusiona con el presente.
Today, the San Alejandro Academy, located at 31st Avenue corner 100, Marianao, Havana, is a nationally recognized center and offers a wide variety of specialties including: Painting; Sculpture; Drawing; Engraving; Ceramics; Graphic Arts; Illustration; Goldsmithing; and Photography and Digital Art. Beyond technique, what one breathes in San Alejandro is art. I imagine generations of young painters, with their dreams, dedicating hours to capturing an idea or the expression of a face. San Alejandro is a living workshop where the past merges with the present.
Este es un centro con visión de futuro, un icono de la educación artística en Cuba. Una institución que forma excelentes creadores, responsables con su entorno social y cultural, intelectuales capaces de reflejar en sus obras la realidad social de Cuba y el mundo. Esta escuela participa activamente en la vida cultural del país a través de eventos como la Bienal de La Habana y proyectos artísticos comunitarios. Como dato curioso, sepan que esta escuela fue fundada en 1818 y es la escuela de arte más antigua de Latinoamérica.
This is a center with a vision for the future, an icon of artistic education in Cuba. An institution that trains excellent creators, who are responsible to their social and cultural environment, intellectuals capable of reflecting the social reality of Cuba and the world in their works. This school actively participates in the country's cultural life through events like the Havana Biennial and community art projects. As a curious fact, you should know that this school was founded in 1818 and is the oldest art school in Latin America.
Aquel día comprendí que una escuela de pintura no es solo un lugar donde se aprenden técnicas o se mezclan colores. Es un lugar donde se aprende a ver, a traducir el mundo con los ojos del alma. Donde la paciencia se forma entre pinceladas y donde un maestro no da las respuestas, sino que enciende una luz por la cual los alumnos deben crear su propio camino. Salí de allí con el olor a óleo impregnado en la ropa, en mi teléfono y con una nueva forma de percibir la belleza que habita en el acto de crear.
That day I understood that a painting school is not just a place where you learn techniques or mix colors. It is a place where you learn to see, to translate the world with the eyes of the soul. Where patience is formed between brushstrokes and where a teacher doesn't give the answers, but rather ignites a light by which the students must create their own path. I left there with the smell of oil paint impregnated on my clothes, on my phone, and with a new way of perceiving the beauty that resides in the act of creating.
