Hello, my friends. I send you all my sincere greetings. You can't imagine how difficult it has been to post these days; my internet connection is terrible. I spend many hours trying, but here I am again.
Recently, I visited the city of Artemisa, the capital of the province of the same name. This province was created in 2011, following the new political-administrative division implemented in the country. Artemisa borders Havana, the capital of Cuba, and is known as "The Red Village" due to its red soil, as well as "The Garden of Cuba" for its lush vegetation. Its name comes from the Greek goddess of hunting and nature, Artemis.
This city has many old buildings that delight the visitor's eyes and transport them to distant times. During my walk, I discovered "San Marcos Church," with its eclectic style, sober façade, and an imposing bell tower. This church is located across from Libertad Park, the city's central park. According to some passersby I spoke to, this church is an architectural and historical monument and a spiritual symbol of Artemisa. It shares space with this large park, surrounded by trees that offer shade to curious walkers and visitors like me.
Another thing I discovered were its long, flat streets. Here, unlike my native Santiago de Cuba, there isn’t a single hill in the entire city. This makes it easy to ride bicycles, and the city can be explored by bike without much effort. Walking through these streets and watching people go about their daily routines made me think that, despite problems, life doesn’t stop. People live their lives, pursue their plans, dreams, and projects. One of the city’s most striking attractions is its famous Boulevard. This is a place where you can find restaurants, cafeterias, shops, and all kinds of businesses. Pizzerias are also abundant here. Throughout the Boulevard, there are benches and columns that beautify the area.
Right on one of the corners leading into the aforementioned Boulevard, across from the church, is the Campoamor Hotel. One of the most beautiful, representative, and iconic buildings in Artemisa. At first glance, you can tell it’s not a luxury hotel but rather an urban hotel that serves those who come to the city for work, tourism, or to visit family and friends. During my tour, I also observed that the city has a peaceful atmosphere. Its people are friendly, hardworking, and proud of their land and history. On street corners, men mostly talk about baseball, as is the case throughout Cuba.
In Artemisa province, though I didn’t visit it that day, there is a place of international renown: Las Terrazas. This town was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and was home to Polo Montañés, a Cuban musician who passed away, leaving all of Cuba and part of the world longing to keep listening and dancing to his music. In another post, I’ll tell you more about this place.
As an interesting fact, I can share that the city originated in the early 19th century when wealthy Havana families who owned sugar mills in the area decided to "put down roots" there to escape a yellow fever epidemic in the capital.
Visiting Artemisa was a gift I owed myself, and I gave it to myself, though I know I’ll have to return another time to discover other places I couldn’t visit due to lack of time. In short, it’s a city with a serene charm, recommended for those who prefer the tranquility offered by places far from the capital.
