El teatro en mí. Parte 1/The Theater in Me. Part 1 (Esp-Eng)
Hello, my friends. It's a pleasure to greet you and to post for the first time in this theater-loving community. This is the first of two posts where I will be talking about the theater.
Humans, by instinct, like to tell stories; you know, we are "gossipy" by nature. Since the dawn of civilization, people gathered around campfires to listen to tales that helped them understand the world. Stories that made them laugh, cry, or tremble with fear. I would be lying if I told you that I visited a theater since I was a little girl; that didn't happen. First, because I lived in the countryside, and second, because my parents never took me; there was no culture regarding that subject.
It was when I was older, well, not that much older, in high school, that I began to discover those spaces, although it was the cinema first, of course. And since I didn't want my children to grow up without knowing and living that experience, I took them to many children's theater performances that were and still are held in the theaters and cinemas of Havana. We went to the Mella Theater, the Yara cinema, the La Rampa cinema, and others. They had so much fun at those performances full of joy and color. They also really enjoyed everything that surrounded those outings, which always included going to Coppelia for ice cream. Unfortunately, I don't have photos from that time since very few people had cell phones; back then, having one of those little devices was a luxury.
As a child, I always had certain histrionic qualities, but it was after high school that I truly discovered them. Theater got into my soul during my pre-university years, where I was a member of the school's theater group. That's where my passion for this art began. In fact, it was the first profession I ever desired in my life. I remember we rehearsed on Wednesdays in the school's theater, and we managed to stage several plays. The one I liked the most was "The House of Bernarda Alba," where I got to play the character of Bernarda herself. We participated in several local, municipal, and even provincial festivals, all with excellent results.
Well, it turns out that in those days, it was very common for young Cubans to go study technical and university careers in the countries of the socialist bloc in Europe. Among those careers was Performing Arts, which was studied at the Stanislavski Academy in Moscow. And of course, getting there was a dream and a great hope for me. I had passed the aptitude tests, and it was just a matter of finishing 12th grade.
But when it's not meant to be,forcing it won't help. The year was 1989, and the collapse of European socialism was already on the horizon, so they gathered us at school and informed us that going to study over there was no longer happening. It was as if a bucket of cold water had been thrown over me (and others too). The capacities for the National Institute of Art (ISA) and the National School of Art (ENA) were filled, and there was no longer an opportunity. That's where my artistic career ended. My dream of being an actress crumbled along with the Berlin Wall. The theaters of Cuba and the world don't know the talent they missed. So this was, we could say, my first professional frustration, and I had to settle for being the actress of my own life.
Fortunately, I have visited almost all the theaters in Havana, but my favorite is the Karl Marx, where I have laughed many times at comedy shows and danced along with musical performances. But speaking purely of theater as an art, nothing compares to going to see a stage production, a play. Theater is the culmination of mankind's ancestral impulse to tell stories. Going to the theater is not just a pastime or entertainment; it is a collective ritual to be experienced with family, friends, partners, or simply alone. It is a space where you can feel the very essence of an artist, where pleasure is shared and multiplied, later transforming into an unforgettable experience.
