A Visit to the Napoleonic Museum/Una Visita al Museo Napoleónico (Eng-Esp)
Hello, my friends. It's always a pleasure to greet you. You are all welcome to my blog.
I had been meaning to visit this place for some time, but geographical fatalism and other factors were against me. Time, that great friend, accomplice, and ally, sometimes isn't enough for all the things we want to do. So, I took advantage of having some errands to run in Vedado and made my way to the Napoleonic Museum of Havana, located at 1159 San Miguel Street, corner of Ronda.

Hace tiempo estaba por visitar este lugar pero el fatalismo geográfico y otros factores estaban en mi contra. El tiempo, ese gran amigo, complice y aliado, a veces no alcanza para todo lo que queremos hacer. Por eso aproveché que tenía que resolver unas gestiones por el Vedado y me llegué al Museo Napoleónico de La Habana, ubicado en la calle San Miguel No. 1159, esq. a Ronda.
I had been told about the beauty of this museum, but upon seeing it, I discovered that reality surpassed my imagination. This site is one of the most surprising and lesser-known jewels of Cuban cultural heritage, a unique museum in Latin America and the Caribbean. There are many Havanans who are unaware of this place's existence. After the initial moment of awe and wonder, the first question I asked myself was, How did this marvelous collection end up in Cuba?
Ya me habían hablado de la belleza de este museo, pero al verlo, descubrí que la realidad era superior a mi imaginación. Este sitio es una de las joyas más sorprendentes y menos conocidas del patrimonio cultural cubano, un museo único en América Latina y el Caribe. Hay muchos habaneros que no saben de la existencia de este lugar. Luego del momento inicial de asombro y deslumbramiento, la primera pregunta que me hice fue ¿Cómo llegó esta maravillosa colección a Cuba?
I then learned,from the explanations of two museum workers, that this is the fruit of a fascinating story of collecting and chance. Julio Lobo Olavarría, the last Cuban "Sugar King," was a billionaire collector obsessed with the figure of Napoleon Bonaparte. For decades, he purchased an immense number of objects related to the emperor at European auctions.
Entonces supe, por las explicaciones de dos trabajadoras del museo, que este es el fruto de una fascinante historia de coleccionismo y azar. Julio Lobo Olavarría, el último "Rey del Azúcar" cubano, era un multimillonario coleccionista obsesionado con la figura de Napoleón Bonaparte. Durante décadas compró en subastas europeas una inmensa cantidad de objetos relacionados con el emperador.
This gentleman didn't just want objects of Napoleon, but from the entire context of the era, so he acquired furniture, works of art, weapons, documents, and personal objects belonging to members of Napoleon's army. To preserve his collection, Luis Lobo acquired this majestic palace, a true work of art with Renaissance details.
When Julio Lobo went into exile after the Revolution, his house and his collection were taken over by the Cuban government, which turned the mansion into a museum housing more than 7,400 pieces.
Este señor no solo quería objetos de Napoleón, sino de todo el contexto de la época, así que adquirió muebles, obras de arte, armas, documentos, y objetos personales de miembros del ejército de Napoleón. Para preservar su colección, Luis Lobo adquirió este majestuoso palacete, una verdadera obra de arte con detalles renacentistas.
Cuando Julio Lobo se exilió después de la Revolución, su casa y su colección fueron intervenidas por el gobierno cubano que convirtió la mansión en un museo que alberga más de 7,400 piezas.
The museum is divided into several themed rooms,which I visited with great fascination. With each step, my excitement grew. As I delved deeper into the place, I saw imperial furniture, porcelain, crystal ware, clocks, and objects illustrating the luxury of that distant court.
El museo está dividido en varias salas temáticas que visité con gran fascinación. A cada paso, mi emoción iba in crechendo. A medida que fui adentrándome en el lugar, vi muebles imperiales, porcelanas, cristalería, relojes y objetos que ilustran el lujo de aquella corte lejana.
There are also several original sculptures and paintings by great masters.There is a large collection of engravings, miniatures, and busts reflecting the image of Napoleon and his family. Something that really caught my attention was the immense windows with the most beautiful stained glass I have ever seen in my life.
También hay varias esculturas y pinturas originales de grandes maestros. Hay una gran colección de grabados, miniaturas y bustos que reflejan la imagen de Napoleón y su familia. Algo que llamó mucho mi atención fueron los inmensos ventanales con los vitrales más hermosos que he visto en mi vida.
In one of its rooms is an impressive collection of firearms,swords (including replicas of Napoleon's coronation sword), uniforms, and army equipment. Also standing out are a dueling pistol that belonged to Napoleon and his hat.
En una de sus salas se encuentra una impresionante colección de armas de fuego, espadas (incluyendo réplicas de la espada de coronación de Napoleón), uniformes y equipo del ejército. Destacan, además, una pistola de duelo que perteneció a Napoleón y su sombrero.
There are many personal objects and documents that are the soul of the collection.Thus, we can see Napoleon's death mask, a lock of his hair, his campaign hat (a bicorne), letters and documents signed by him, books from his personal library in exile.
Hay muchos objetos personales y documentos que son el alma de la colección. Así podemos ver la máscara mortuoria de Napoleón, un mechón de su cabello, su sombrero de campaña (un bicornio), cartas y documentos firmados por él, libros de su biblioteca personal en el exilio.
As I ascended its marble staircases and wandered through its halls, I felt as if I were in a European palace of the kind I've often seen in movies. Here we see a family tree and other objects and paintings. There are also candelabras and ceiling lamps of great beauty. The Museum also possesses a specialized library with more than 4,000 volumes, making it a reference center for scholars of the Napoleonic period.
Al subir por sus escaleras de mármol y recorrer sus salones, me sentí como si estuviera en un palacio europeo de esos que tanto he visto en las películas. Aquí vemos una árbol genealógico de la familia y otros objetos y pinturas. También hay candelabros y lámparas de techo de gran belleza. El Museo también posee una biblioteca especializada con más de 4,000 volúmenes, convirtiéndola en un centro de referencia para estudiosos del período napoleónico.
Upon leaving, the blinding light of the sun and the Havana afternoon greeted me with a slap in the face. The smell of gasoline and the routine of the streets created a brutal contrast with the luxury, elegance, and fascinating world I had left behind.
I walked along the sidewalk, and for a moment, I felt that I hadn't just visited a museum, but that I had stepped into a time machine. Visiting this incredible museum is like taking a journey into the past, it's connecting European history with Cuba's in a unique and singular way.
Al salir, la luz cegadora del sol y de la tarde habanera, me recibieron con un golpe en el rostro. El olor a gasolina y la rutina de las calles, hicieron un brutal contraste con el lujo, la elegancia y el mundo fascinante que había dejado atrás.
Caminé por la acera, y por un momento, sentí que no solo había visitado un museo, sino que me había subido en una máquina del tiempo. Visitar este increíble museo es como hacer un viaje al pasado, es conectar la historia europea con la cubana de una manera única y singular.

The museum has such a beautiful and rare collection, which is easily revealed through your writing. I was really surprised to hear the descriptions of Napoleon's personal belongings, old weapons and those wonderful stained glass windows. You have combined both information and emotion so well, I loved it.

Me encanta ese museo, un sitio con objetos muy interesantes, cuando lo visité me sorprendio mucho conocer la cantidad de piezas pertenecietes a Napoleón que se conservan en Cuba.
