Antes de contar la historia de cómo se formó mi familia de gatas, me gustaría contar una breve reseña. Desde pequeña siempre me han gustado los animales. Nunca pude tener uno en casa, pero hace varios años, me entregaron un gato pequeño al que llamé Felipe. Él vivió hasta los 3 años porque lamentablemente falleció por una enfermedad repentina. En esos años, el amigo que me lo entregó, tenía una gata que solía quedar embarazada unas dos veces al año.
Me gustaría aclarar que en ese momento, ni él y yo teníamos conciencia de que lo mejor era que la gata fuera esterilizada. Pues muchas veces sus crías no encontraban buen hogar, o fallecían. De hecho la gata murió a los 13 años, pero se notaba bastante deteriorada por el hecho de embarazarse tan a menudo. Ojalá hubiéramos tenido más información y así la gata podría haber tenido una mejor salud y hubiéramos evitado muchos problemas para ella y los gatitos.
Before telling the story of how my cat family was formed, I'd like to share a brief background. Since I was little, I've always loved animals. I was never able to have one at home, but several years ago, I was given a kitten I named Felipe. He lived until he turned 3 years old, sadly he died of a sudden illness. During those years, the friend who gave him to me had a cat that used to became pregnant about twice a year.
I'd like to clarify that at the time, neither he nor I were aware that it was best for the cat to be spayed. Her kittens often didn't find good homes or died. In fact, the cat died at 13 years old, but she was noticeably deteriorating from being pregnant so often. I wish we'd had more information, so that the cat could have been healthier, and we could have avoided many problems for her and the kittens.
Dicho esto, Felipe era hijo de esa gata, y unos meses después de su muerte, de nuevo ella tuvo más crías, así que fui a verlos cuando tenían 4 semanas, y una gatita gris y con mal humor llamó mi atención. Me la llevé a casa y después de convencer a mis padres de tenerla (cosa que no fue muy difícil), me hice cargo de ella, y a pesar de su mal humor, fue tomando confianza y comenzó a crecer muy saludable..
Dicho esto, Felipe era hijo de esa gata, y unos meses después de su muerte, de nuevo ella tuvo más crías, así que fui a verlos cuando tenían 4 semanas, y una gatita gris y con mal humor llamó mi atención. Me la llevé a casa y después de convencer a mis padres de tenerla (cosa que no fue muy difícil), me hice cargo de ella, y a pesar de su mal humor, fue tomando confianza y comenzó a crecer muy saludable.

That said, Felipe was the son of that cat, and a few months after her death, she had more kittens again, so I went to see them when they were 4 weeks old, and a grumpy gray kitten caught my eye. I took her home and, after convincing my parents to keep her (which wasn't too difficult), I took her in, and despite her bad mood, she gained confidence and began to grow very healthy.

Her green eyes and gray fur always seemed very pretty to me, and I also noticed that she had long and fluffy hair.
Creció mucho y se convirtió en una gata muy linda / She grew a lot and became a very beautiful cat
Un par de años después, el mismo amigo me habló de una gata pequeña que rondaba por su calle, estaba sola pero uno de los gatos de la zona la había adoptado, la protegía y le permitía estar con ella. Aún así, las personas no la querían, y también era rechazada por otros gatos, y a pesar de eso, era una gata muy cariñosa.
Fue así que decidí llevarla conmigo, la busqué y a partir de ese momento comenzó su nueva vida en casa. Después de haber crecido mucho, acá está en su plena adultez:
A couple of years later, the same friend told me about a little cat wandering around his street. She was alone, but one of the local cats had adopted her, protected her, and allowed her to be with him. Still, people didn't like her, and she was also rejected by other cats, yet despite that, she was a very affectionate cat.
So I decided to take her with me. I looked for her, and from that moment on, she began her new life at home. After growing a lot, here she is, fully grown:
Estoy segura de que si no las hubiera adoptado, habrían tenido una vida difícil, quizá incluso muy corta. Todos los animales callejeros merecen la oportunidad de tener una vida mejor. Incluso cuando se hace imposible adoptarlos por falta de espacio, tiempo o dinero, merecen nuestro amor, respeto y cuidados.
I'm sure that if I hadn't adopted them, they would have had a difficult life, perhaps even a very short one. All stray animals deserve the chance at a better life. Even when it's impossible to adopt them due to lack of space, time, or money, they deserve our love, respect, and care.
Y pues, fue así como se formó esta pequeña familia de dos gatas hermanas de distintas madres. El primer año no fue fácil, pues la gata gris se sentía amenazada por compartir casa con otro gato, lo que le generó un poco de estrés, pero hicimos pequeños cambios como separar sus comederos y zonas de aseo. Y con el tiempo se acostumbró a la presencia de u nuevo gato. A estas alturas probablemente no puedan vivir la una sin la otra.
And so, this little family of two sister cats from different mothers was formed. The first year wasn't easy, as the gray cat felt threatened by sharing a home with another cat, which caused her some stress, but we made small changes like separating their food bowls and toilet areas. And over time, she got used to the presence of a new cat. At this point, they probably can't live without each other.
Ahora tienen entre 13 y 11 años, pero se ven bastante sanas y jóvenes.
They are now between 13 and 11 years old, but they look quite healthy and young.

La verdad casi siempre es la gata de ojos amarillos la que persigue a la gata gris, pero ya se acostumbraron jaja.
The truth is that it's almost always the yellow-eyed cat that chases the gray cat, but they've gotten used to it haha.
Un dato curioso es que nunca les puse nombre, así que hasta ahora solo son las gatas de la casa, y las distinguimos por su color. Solían ser la grande y la chiquita, pero ya son del mismo tamaño (por cierto, un poco grandes).
A curious fact is that I never named them, so for now they're just the house cats, and we distinguish them by their color. They used to be the big one and the little one, but now they're the same size (a bit big, by the way).
Las comidas que más les gusta es el pollo y el pescado. De hecho, aunque si comen gatarina, las comidas naturales a base de pescado es lo que más consumen, y eso las tiene bastante saludables y con un pelaje muy suave y sedoso.
Their favorite foods are chicken and fish. In fact, although they do eat cat food, they mostly eat natural fish-based foods, which keeps them quite healthy and their fur very soft and silky.
They were also spayed several years ago, and are generally in good health, so I hope they live for many more years. They are adorable and quite well-behaved.
Espero que si leas esto, estés donde estés, puedas ver lo importante que es para un animal callejero, darle la oportunidad de tener una buena vida, una familia y albergue seguro. Y que no tengas miedo de ayudar incluso cuando otros no lo hacen, de esterilizar a un callejero, de alimentarle, sanarlo si está herido, buscarle hogar... Todos los animales merecen nuestro respeto y apoyo. Todos merecen vivir en buenas condiciones, y cada uno de nosotros podemos aportar para que eso pase. No solo ser amables con los animales que dejamos entrar a nuestra familia, si no también con los que no tienen una.
I hope that if you read this, wherever you are, you can see how important it is for a stray animal to be given the chance at a good life, a family, and a safe home. And that you aren't afraid to help even when others aren't, to spay or neuter a stray, to feed them, to heal them if they're hurt, to find them homes... All animals deserve our respect and support. They all deserve to live in good conditions, and each of us can contribute to making that happen. We must not only be kind to the animals we let into our families, but also to those who don't have one.
