My Favourite Teacher And His Qualities

Hello!

Wednesday of last week, I was seated in an open area close to the road, where cars, bikes, and pedestrians were moving to and fro, and coincidentally, I saw a man walk past who looked exactly like one of the teachers I consider my favourite teacher in my whole school life. I knew it was not the teacher, but after he passed, I began to reminisce on the good old days with the teacher, and a question popped up in my mind, "Is that really your favourite teacher?"

I paused and ran through all the teachers that had taught me in school—both in primary, secondary, and tertiary education—and I could not find anyone that matched his capability of teaching or how much he impacted me.

What makes him my favourite teacher?

As for me, a teacher is considered good if he knows how to break down a difficult topic and make the student find it easy. I do not rate good teachers based on their educational qualifications—no, some of them have the certificates and qualifications but are very far from knowing how to teach, and that is a simple truth.

Mr. Otutu—yes, that is his name—is actually a physics teacher by profession, but he knows mathematics just as well as he knows physics, and I am not surprised, because anyone that understands physics very well must be grounded in mathematics.

At first, he started as our physics teacher in senior secondary school, and we fell in love with the way he took his time to explain the concepts of the “almighty” physics, making the imaginative topics in physics become reality—especially when it came to calculating distances, such as length, distance covered by an aeroplane, weight of an object, speed, force, and many others. Let me tell you, when we first started the physics subject, we found it difficult because the teacher handling us was not into teaching at all, so we began to see the subject as the most difficult. But when this man, Mr. Otutu, came on board, we saw the subject as the easiest.

How did he do that? How does he teach?

This man took his time to explain, giving clear and visible examples so that anytime we applied the logic, we would easily understand the topic.

Like I mentioned, he did not just teach us physics—he was our “borrowed” mathematics teacher. Borrowed in the sense that we found him very good in mathematics, even though we already had a maths teacher. So, we initiated an agreement for him to teach us mathematics via extra classes, and he agreed. From then on, mathematics became easy-peasy for us.

Thanks for reading.
