Lingering shame

Greetings everyone!

Talking about embarrassing moments, I've had a lot of them, and there are some I just wish we could turn back the hands of time and go back to that particular day to make some corrections, or if possible, just wipe off the thought from my memory and never think of it again.

Among the many, is one that happened three years ago when I relocated to my current city of residence.

I stayed very close to my boss's wife's shop, with whom we related very well and did things as a family. This woman had up to five apprentices (ladies) in her tailoring shop, which I usually stayed to mingle with as I handled a little daily task in the place for my boss. Due to the closeness, I had keys to the shop which they dropped with me every day as they closed from work.

On a particular Sunday evening, my gas ran out while cooking food. There was no way to refill the gas because it was late at night, and if I left my food halfway done, it would spoil before dawn. So I decided to go into their shop and take their gas to complete my cooking and return it the following morning. "An hour's usage won't exhaust the gas," I thought and concluded.

I did just that, ate my food in peace, and the following day, I decided to use it to warm my food before returning it and going to refill my gas cylinder. I was doing that when I got a call and turned off the gas, leaving the house to attend the call.
This lasted for a while, and when I came back, it was already afternoon, and guess what? The woman was ranting in all manners, saying all sorts without considering that she was referring to a grown-up guy.

I tried to explain to her that I took the gas the previous night and intended to return it that morning, but she didn't let me talk. Instead, she instructed one of her girls to follow me to get the gas cylinder.

Look at this;

The girl she instructed to follow me is not actually her student; she just came around to make use of her machine to work on some clothes because she knows how to sew perfectly. Also, I had a crush on her, to which I had expressed my intentions, but she kept giving me the runaround. So if was a spoil of show for me

The lady was just surprised, looking at my low life of not being able to refill my cooking gas and going about borrowing.
When I handed the gas to her, I tried to explain about what led me to take the gas, but I was short of words and couldn't pull up a convincing explanation. She took it and walked away, giving me that weird look.

For the past two years, it's been my gas and my cooking items that this woman uses to cook her lunch. Anytime she comes, my mind will quickly reflect on how she once treated me because I took her gas to cook, and I'll just smile. A typical example of no one knows tomorrow

As for my crush, she doesn't stay in our city; she comes seldomly from Abuja. Anytime I see her in church, the scene of what happened that day would flash in and I feel very bad.

I wish it were possible for the woman to go and let her know that she was wrong the way she shouted at me that day.

I wish it were possible for me to go back to the day I collected the gas and never collect it again.

I wish it were possible to take away that memory from my mind like it never happened.

Thanks for reading.

This is my entry to Hivenaija prompt of the week

The woman might simply think you had been using the gas for a longer time without her knowledge. If I were you, I would try to let the memory go and free my mind from the bad feelings.

Lol🤣
You're directly telling me that you're in the same class with the woman. People that don't have conscience.
These kind of people, heaven's gate is very far away from them.

You better repent. Lol🤣

Thank you for coming around Tuesday 🥰

I think a simple phone call across to your Boss wife before taking the gas, would have saved you the embarrassment.

But still yet she was not considerate enough. the fact she trust you with her shop keys then what is ordinary gas🤷

I know that it must have been very embarrassing, especially since your crush was there, but you sef why didn't you return the gas with the same speed you used to borrow it? Lol

Anyway, we all learn from moments like this.😄
