WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION

Technology has been awesome over the years, we have seen it improve tremendously especially within the last twenty years. But then again I will always say that technology brought about unforeseen destruction that has caused chaos in the past. Let's start with the atomic bomb that was invented during world war III. That weapon created harm whose effect is still felt to date. Countries like China and Japan still have areas with high mutation rates because of the amount of radiation those nations were exposed to after the atomic bomb went off. Talk about radiation, that's another area of technology I have never liked because the rate of harm is very high. Working with an oil firm has exposed me to the knowledge of radiation and how harmful it can be to us.

I work with a company specialized in Non Destructive Testing services. And this job is one of the high risk jobs one could ever come across in the oil and gas industry. Just last month the Radiation Safety officer of my company lost his Job for gross negligence. A high radiation emitter usually called a SOURCE was taken from the source pit for a job and left in a vehicle till work resumption and even until the afternoon. Normally these things are used when nobody is around and only two engineers work on it under the Radiation Safety rule that allows just one person to carry it, of which the person who carries it can never be allowed to take it back. The duty of the Radiation Safety officer is to ensure that every Radiation Safety rule is duly followed.

Now it turned out that after the RSO also known as Radiation Safety officer gave permission to get the SOURCE out of the Source pit, he didn't oversee its return after the job was done and that was because the job was done in the night and the Engineers left the source in one of the company's vehicles so when he comes in the morning they can access the source pit to return it. Turned out he forgot to take it back in the morning and my MD found out about it while checking out that car to give to the mechanic for repairs. Immediately the SOURCE was discovered in the car, the RSO was fired on the spot because everyone in the company had been exposed to radiation from the morning time up until that moment.

But that's not all, on a norm if such equipment was to leave the company building, it must the escorted by a bomb squad, now imagine if the mechanic had taken it, he could become paralyzed while driving, if the police should stop him and see such equipment, the company would automatically be shut down by the government. My question is, why produce such harmful equipment in the first place. One time an engineer shared with me how a supervisor was paralyzed for life because some of the engineers decided to punish him by putting an empty SOURCE under his chair. After sitting for about an hour, the supervisor became totally paralyzed due to the radiation from an empty SOURCE. Now imagine what a working SOURCE would do… for this I would say technology went too far because most of the inventors even died inventing these stuffs.
