SURVIVAL SKILLS
There are certain survival skills that every human is supposed to know, and swimming just happens to be one of them. We also have the basic fire fighting and CPR, however, it is so unfortunate that the only thing they teach in PE/PHE especially in this part of the world is almost nothing and most times the kids are left to play as they like during these classes because according to the teachers, there is nothing to teach but meanwhile even the teachers do not know this basic life hack. I am not a very good swimmer, but I know my swimming techniques will keep me alive for a while before help comes at least and if possible I will love to improve it. This is because I have seen first hand what the lack of these knowledge can do to a person and it’s not just swimming. These hacks are mandatory for unforeseen circumstances and learning them should be one of the major requirements to leave high school and not just maths and english like we have in our society.

I have a scar on my feet from a fire incident because I lacked the basic knowledge of fire fighting. I guess a lot of people do not even know that there are different types of fires and these types require different methods of fighting. I also know for a fact that swimming has it’s basic techniques, at least even if a person doesn’t know how to move in water, they should be able to learn how to float upwards and stay afloat just in case they experience unforeseen events. I almost lost my best friend growing up because he could not stay afloat inside a pool and it was after that incident I told a grown up who was with me to teach me how to stay afloat. That was the beginning of my little swimming lessons. I would go to a pool and ask any random person to teach me what they do and one day I went to the beach and I found out that it does not entirely work the same way in natural water.

I could not fully learn everything there is until I attended some basic swimming lessons that taught us how to stay afloat in natural water. So yeah I am not very good of a swimmer, I am not even close to average, but I think with the little I know I will be able to stay alive at least and if possible get hold of something to keep me floating while I wait for help to come. I remember looking for my best friend as a child and could not go under because I knew I did not know how to come back up, but at least now I do, I might not be able to go in too deep, but at least if I fall inside, I should have a 70% chance of coming out alive which is most important. If I have time in the future, I do not mind paying for swimming lessons and other life saving lessons.

Thanks to the HSE class I took during my service year, I have basic knowledge in fIre fighting and CPR. Unfortunately with swimming, I got an amateur to teach me which almost caused me my life. Been scared ever since.
