SELF MEDICATION GONE BAD

Self meditation is something I've recently come to go against, after seeing first hand the harm it has the capability of causing. I became scared for my life when I saw a colleague of mine nearly lose her life to something I've been doing all my life. I've literally grown watching my mother prescribe medications for every member of the family which usually always works. But after seeing what could happen if self meditation goes wrong I started seeking professional advice for meditations. Last week I wrote a post about how I spent over seven years without taking medication of any sort. The day I went to the hospital for a check up after seeing what a colleague of mine who had been self medicating went through, I was so scared that the doctor would find terrible things with my health, but it turned out I was even more healthy than I thought.

When I said I didn't take any medication of any sort, I mean I didn't visit the pharmacy for once, not even for a headache. Not because I was totally sickness free, but because I allowed my body to heal itself anytime I was feeling sick. It was even recently I realized such a thing even existed (The body healing itself). But then again even when I wasn't taking meds, my mother always knew the right medication for my siblings and they always worked. Sometimes I feel a lot of our African mothers have this super power. My sister has also inherited this from my mother, but lately I've had to caution her against it. One night she was feeling feverish and asked if I knew anything she could take for a cold. I simply told her to wait it out till in the morning so she doesn't add to whatever issue she was having with her health.

One time I was at the office when a colleague of mine just collapsed and started jerking with saliva coming out of her mouth. All efforts to revive her were proving abortive for almost 30 minutes until she finally stopped and passed out. Her pulse was very weak and we were so scared we were going to lose her. By the time we rushed her to the ER, the doctors had to administer artificial oxygen while they diagnosed what was wrong with her. Turned out she took the wrong medication which she had been taking for a very long while till it started affecting her kidneys. According to the doctor she was lucky it wasn't that bad, but she needed to start a new round of medications and rehabilitation. They even had to flush her system and give her about 8 pounds of blood before she was out of any danger.

That same week another employee had a severe ulcer attack, it turned out it was from the malaria medication her friend prescribed for her. The two cases we had that week made my company take the staff HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) seriously for all staff qualified. We started doing routine BP checks and other body check ups to avoid being in a position where one would have to self meditate. One reason we self medicate is because medications have become very expensive around here, and a lot of us might not be able to afford proper medications so we go for whatever we see. Sometimes this might end up treating the symptoms and not the main issue or might go totally bad when it causes another problem instead of a solution. Understanding this is why I decided to completely stop self meditation.
