GOVERNMENT OF SOME PEOPLE

Growing up, we were taught that democracy is the government of the people, for the people and by the people. But today we see a government of some people by some people, and for themselves. The real issue with democracy is the fact that a lot of the people in power first come into power by faulting the rule that says democracy is government by the people. In a nation where there is a system of government different from the one the people know. A system that truly decides who gets into power regardless of what the citizens clearly want. A country where citizens can't speak up for fear of being targeted. This system has made the word “Democracy” sound like a myth as a lot of us youth never got to see a democratic government come into power at the people's will.

I personally think Democracy is a myth not just in my country, but also in powerful nations of the world. It's no longer democracy when you tell citizens to choose between the devil himself and his demons. You find citizens voting for who will make them suffer less. At the end of the day it is the party and politicians who proved to play their cards better with more corrupt practices that enter into power. The difference between my country and many American and European countries is the fact that the government decisions can not be influenced by the people that brought the government into power. What is Democracy there if the government is not showing that it is for the people.

In October 2020 what is known as one of the worst crimes in humanity saw a government kill her own citizens in cold blood. Citizens who weren't violent, citizens who were holding the National flag and singing the National Anthem all because the government felt threatened that such people were speaking against what was going wrong in the nation. And this year, in the month of August, the government imprisoned her citizens who engaged in a peaceful protest against the inflation rate in the country and did so in the name of treason. It's a normal thing in my country when governments have their way, it's a normal thing when elections are rigged in favor of the loser.

Democracy is a myth and will always continue to be a myth until all three rules of democracy are obeyed. But then again this brings the question, is democracy what we really need in this country? Looking at what happens when a majority can come out and stand up for whatever they believe (Whether right or wrong) in my opinion would bring a destabilized government. Yes the government should be brought into power by the people, the government should be for the people, but the government should not be run by the masses. If the masses could lead very well, there should be no need for a government (my opinion). It is the duty of the government to be for the people therefore take the people into due consideration when making decisions and if the people are not pleased with the changes, then the government should be able to allow the people to speak their concerns and try to settle whatever concerns the citizens have while working for the people.

Yes I totally agree with you,
Democracy is no longer for the people but for a particular group of people who are not ready to step down
