ACCOMPLICE
Growing up I had this one friend who I would call my best friend, we grew as kids to adolescents until we became young adults. We fought, played and stuck out for each other no matter how hard the situation was. There was this one time my dad got a new car and the only people that knew about it was his family. We were all told never to say a word about it to anyone but my friend had a big mouth. (His mouth is literally big though and I often make fun of it). He mentioned it in a place someone who knew both of our families was in and the person called my dad to congratulate him. My dad knew it could only be one of the children (My sister, his sister, him, and me) that spilled the beans and he decided to interrogate us.
I knew he was the one, but knowing he would be in a lot of trouble with his parents and mine I decided not to speak and so did he. We collected 24 strokes of leather belt that day, seeing us shouting we didn't know as my dad unleashed fury on both of us. At the beating I was angry with him and we fought real well. He didn't have strength but I on the other hand did well to release my own fury fist on him. I do not fight on a normal day, but this was one of the few times I fought in my life. After the fight we settled and things went back to normal. Another time my sister was on a call with her boyfriend when my mum called. Trust Nigerian mum's to suspect at every given opportunity. Knowing that she wasn't doing anything wrong, I simply told my mum she hadn't come back from work.
I do not enjoy lying, but when it comes to covering up for those around me, I tend to do it without reasoning. I do not break my moral codes for just anyone, it's Usually for those who are closest to my heart. If there's anyone to punish them for whatever wrong I'm covering them up from, it should be me, and this is what I bear in mind whenever I'm covering up for them. But funny enough now that I think of it, there was a time I decided to stop covering up for people and was doing the exact opposite which was telling on them, it was right, but it never felt right. After sometime I realized there's a big difference between what's right and what's needful at that time. Sometimes the right thing could be wrong especially if done in the wrong way.
This made me start believing in second chances even for those who didn't deserve it. I remember one time I was in an exam hall and this guy was seen by a lecturer writing something below his desk. I told him to give me his question paper when the lecturer wasn't looking. Although I almost got caught and how I wish anything happened to me, it would have been because I was trying to help someone. I do not like to judge people by what they did but rather what they are doing. This is never easy, but I can't just turn on a blind eye whenever they need me.
