We Went To See Beetlejuice 2

Me and Aimee both liked the first Beetlejuice movie, and wanted to see this new one when we heard it was coming out. But, with everything going on over the last couple of weeks we hadn't had a chance to do so.

While on the bus back down to hers the other day I asked if she wanted to go and see it. She said yes, but needed to ask if her parents would be cool with minding Kaleb for a few hours while we did. Luckily they were grand, and we were able to go.

The Cinema

I'd heard some things about it, and the general consensus was that it wasn't a great film, but I tend to ignore those sorts of reviews if it's something I actually want to check out.

If I'm on the fence about seeing something and I hear it's crap then I'm more likely to give it a miss, especially considering it's not exactly cheap to go and see movies these days.

We saw it on the Imaxx screen, and the chairs in that lobby are so comfier than the regular chairs, but only certain films tend to show in it.

The Film

I wouldn't say it's a full-on, laugh-a-minute, comedy, but it is fairly funny and I really enjoyed plenty of moments.

I've always liked Tim Burton's movies, and I think his certain style is very good. There were moments in the film that were stop-motion animated, and even characters that appeared who were.

There were certain characters and creatures who were ugly in a cute kind of way, sort of like a pug.

The actors reprised their roles brilliantly, and each one played to their strengths. I think Beetlejuice as a character is great, and in this, he's exactly what you'd expect—wisecracking, quick-witted, with a sharp tongue.

The dialogue and delivery in general hit all the right beats, and the film in general had a great flow to it. We're introduced to the underworld fairly early on, and the power dynamics between each of the characters are established early on.

Dream Sequence

There are these interesting dream-like sequences that appear in the film, one at the end is so well done and I was glued to the screen amazed by how interesting it was.

A song played, while each character kind of sang along and in waves it would change, only to suddenly come back. It's kind of hard to describe it without giving away spoilers but it's really cool, and if you're not expecting it - like we weren't - it's great.

It hits like a ton of bricks, takes you on a trip, and when it's over you're kind of sad because you want to be back there, but you're happy because you're back on solid ground again.
