The Final Piece of The Puzzle
I never thought I'd be excited about buying a printer, but life has a way of changing people.
Selling games online has become my latest hobby, and it's something I have wanted to do for a long time. I like gaming/ games in general, and would often pick stuff up if I came across them for a decent price. I'd say this idea formed around 7 or 8 years ago.
Flash forward to a few weeks ago; I came across a good deal on some PS1 games, 8 for €40, which were in pristine condition, and had a collective value - if sold separately - of €285-ish Euros. Just so happens that there were a few rare ones in the bundle. Seeing the potential for earnings, I went wild and started buying.
Visiting nearby towns to see what their charity shops had, picked up some more good deals, and when the pickings were slim after a week or so, I moved to purchasing bundles on the Facebook Marketplace, and I got some great bargains.
Stock wise, I have picked up about 150 - 200 games, PS1, PS2, PS3 PS4, Xbox Original, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo DS, Wii, and PC games. Some factory sealed, some rare, most in really condition, and of course, a few unsellable duds, (cracked discs, no serial codes) but they're few and far between, and also, some value sits in game box's, manuals, and original covers. So, it's not a big deal.
This is the latest item I've bought, which will help kick off my quest of global domination.
I bought stands for photographing games, a white backdrop also for photographing them, I have LED lights for product shots, and I bought 100 padded envelopes for shipping. I also bought some white fabric to make my own lightbox, which I haven't done yet, but will soon.
The one thing I was missing in all this was a printer for the postage details.
Now, I could have gotten around this by simply writing the address on the parcel, but my handwriting isn't the best, and also, a printer will come in handy for general uses, such as printing scripts and manuscripts to take some physical notes and corrections.
It said that it includes the printer only and I was going to pick some ink up too, but decided against it.
For €25 I could get a standard cartridge - 180 sheets
For €35 I could get an XL cartridge - 400 sheets.
I was going to go for the larger one, but decided not to buy it because from an Irish site I can by an XL cartridge for €19, so didn't see the point in spending nearly double that in Tesco.
Luckily I didn't pick it up, or buy the ink cartridge online, however, because it did in fact come with some.
It's a bit weird that they didn't mention that ink is included.
I think these are standard sized cartridges, so I think I'll have more than enough ink for my first initial sales.
It looks pretty snazzy, and was well packaged.
It's like opening some sort of new toy, and I'm delighted to have picked this up.
My office will be complete now with this bad boy, and I have enough room on my desk for it, since I recently had a clear out and worked on organising it a bit better.
Here it is, properly set up.
It's not too heavy, and it doesn't seem to take up much space at all, so having this on the desk, or even put away when not needed, won't be a problem.
It is wireless, but has an option for a hardwired connection - however, the cable wasn't included, which I find kind of strange.
It shouldn't be a problem using it wireless, however, my PC doesn't have a wireless card, so I'm going to have to use my laptop with it for the time being, until I pick up the cable.
I may have one laying around, so I might not need to buy it.
I some how managed to get it back in the box.
Since I'm in Aimee's at the moment, I can't take it out and give it a proper whirl yet, but I couldn't contain my excitement to see the new addition to the office.
I have/ had some savings laying around, which is good, so I could get this operation setup.
Buying myself things has never really been my thing. I was looking at the savings building up for the better part of a year, and didn't want to blow it.
Here and there I used chunks to buy some crypto, but when investing, I would only use small bits which I could slowly build back up over the course of a few weeks.
I didn't want to lose the bulk of it, so was careful. Until this little venture.
So far I have spent €550-ish on stock, and all the bits and pieces I needed. I also bought a few other things separate to this re-selling thing, which took about €300-ish; the camera mount, capture card, and converter to play old games.
I also went to Tenerife, which ended up costing a lot more than I thought it would.
Right now, I'm down to about €450 in my savings, so it's time to start reclaiming some of the €550-ish that I spent, and after that, I'll be in profit, and will have more disposable money to buy a few more bundles of games I find.
I don't like having less than €1,000 in my emergency fund; quick accessible money that isn't tied up in other things. It was kind of scary over the last few weeks seeing that money dwindle, but I have a good feeling about it, which has helped to settle my mind.
Hopefully your business will take off, it might be the start of a lucrative business
Here's hoping, but to be honest my intentions are slow and steady, I'd like to gradually build myself up to potentially decent sales, rather than starting too fast.
I love the process of finding stock, photgraphing, and pricing it, so I'm looking forward to things finally starting to get going.
When you've got more in your emergency fund, and if you're printing a lot of labels, a Zebra GK420D could be the answer ! It prints 6x4 thermal labels, so no cartridges needed. Here in the UK, Royal Mail gives rolls of labels out for free if you've got an account with them, and I wouldn't be surprised in An Post do the same.
They're also hyper-durable. I'm on my third one now (with the second tired but in reserve and still usable), but if you consider that each one has lasted over 5 years and printed roughly 100,000 labels, that's pretty awesome reliability.
I was actually looking at the thermal printers, and I think they would be a much better investment in the long run. I do kind of need a printer anyway, so was happy to pick this up for the time being.
I was actually wondering about buying rolls of postage labels, but I'm not sure how it works regarding different parcels going to different counties. So, for the first few I'll just calculate the weight and size, and then pay it per item at the post office.

That will be great if it takes off! One thing I can recommend from personal experience - get a thermal label printer! We use it and it does wonders for shipping address labels. That’s for the future if it goes well and you can start to sell the stuff at a regular pace and look to make some upgrades.
Also be careful with printer ink - look up online if your printer will accept off label ink, not all of them will! If you put in a foreign cartridge it either won’t print at all or may print very poorly. That’s something I learned a few years ago, and it’s annoying to say the least but these companies do what they can to force consumers in their expensive direction.
Looking forward to some updates on this stuff man!
Thanks for the advice man, I'll make sure to only use the right ink for it.
Dude! Label printers, I was considering getting one, bought the printer, Aimee then went on Amazon and saw a label printer was down from €130-ish, to €80. I was raging I bought the printer, but decided to just use it for the time being. I do need one anyway, so it's all good for now.
I'll pick a label printer up in the future though, I'd like to see how well the selling goes first though before I make any upgrades.
Yeah that's what we did, we made sure to get enough sales and have positive profit before we made upgrades. Once we did, and got the label printer, going back to a printer for some labels for specific sites was tough haha. Really good to use the label once you get the revenue for it!
