Pear Seeds

A few weeks ago I wrote about germinating a few pear seeds I got after finishing one.

Now, I didn't really have high hopes, but thought it would be fun to see what happens to them. I took two seeds, wrapped them in damp kitchen roll, sprinkled some cinnamon so they wouldn't go moldy, and put them in a small container in the fridge.

I checked them about 2 weeks later and one sprouted, while the other didn't.

They were left for another couple of weeks - because I kind of forgot about them - until last night.

I hastily planted them, and took them both out to snap a photo.

When I checked them, both had sprouted a fairly long white root each.

We've been planting some stuff, so I decided to put them in soil and let them grow properly.

I'm excited to see what will happen.

I put them in pots, but remembered reading that you should put an upturned shot glass over the seed when they're planted.

I was about to do so, but then I realised that this little incubator thing that Aimee's dad has would be the exact same as the shot glass method.

Currently he is growing Chilly's in this, and the first batch is out in pots at the moment, so I asked if I could use one of the squares to plant these in it, which he was cool with.

As we speak they're chilling in the soil waiting to sprout from the soil.

At the side there you can see some of the Chilly plants, and he also has some beetroots there too slightly out of frame.

I'm excited to see how they get on. I think for the first year I'll keep them in a large pot, until they're ready to go in the ground. To be fair, I'd just wait until they're hardy enough and plant them, but I have no idea where to put them.

One will most likely go in my mums backgarden, maybe even both of them if she has space. Wherever they go, they'll need a fair bit of space where they won't be in the way in the years to come.

It would be great if I had my own place to plant them, but currently I don't. But, who knows what tomorrow will bring, me and Aimee could be in our own place within the year, and that's why I want to keep them in pots for the time being.

Pear Trees, similarly to apple trees, fruit properly every 2 years and it takes about 4 years until they give off proper fruit. On the off years I'll probably just take whatever they grow and use it for compost or something, so at least that way nothing will go to waste.

If you really think about it, plants are insane. I've been really enjoying some of the growing process so far, and will share some other things I've been doing in the coming weeks.

Are you interested in growing some stuff? Seeds, feed and soil is pretty much everywhere at the moment, and it's a good time to get started. You don't need a bit garden with soil to do so, as most of Aimee's parents stuff around being grown in bags, and basins. There are plenty of options, even hanging baskets can be good for things like Strawberries.

It's a good time to get going, and most things will be ready to harvest within 3-6 months, somethings can even be ready in as little as 6 weeks.
